Bars create Christmas cocktails to win New York trip

Bars around London are competing to create the best Christmas cocktails with Fords Gin for a chance to win a trip to New York City.

The “12 Cocktails of Christmas” campaign is being run by The 86 Co for its premium gin brand, encouraging bar teams to bring the full spirit of Christmas to life with their cocktails, including seasonal puns, decorations and traditionally festive flavours.

Top bars such as The Wigmore, Satan’s Whiskers and Swift have entered by adding a specially created Fords Gin cocktail to their menu throughout December until January 1.

Representatives from Fords Gin plus other judges will visit each of the bars to find the 12 best creations. The cocktails will be marked on appearance (five points); taste, flavour and balance (10 points); and the Christmas factor (five points).

Twelve finalists will recreate their recipes for the judges in January – after the Christmas madness is over. They will go head to head for one to be crowned overall winner with the NYC trip prize.

Distilled in London at Thames Distillers, Fords Gin is a collaboration between leading master distiller Charles Maxwell and Simon Ford of The 86 Co. The gin is made with nine botanicals, starting with juniper and coriander seed and balanced by the citrus of bitter orange, lemon and grapefruit peel, the floral ingredients of jasmine flower and orris and the spice of angelica and cassia. The botanicals are steeped for 15 hours before distillation in 500-litre stills.
