Alex Walker of The Beaufort Bar at The Savoy in London has won a place in the global finals of Beefeater Gin’s MIXLDN cocktail competition.
He was declared national champion after competing against other bartenders from across the UK who were challenged to create a recipe inspired by the city they live and work in, using either Beefeater Dry or Beefeater 24 gins.
His cocktail was called Syon House, named after the historic estate outside London which hosted the global launch of Beefeater 24 eight years ago.
With entries from 24 countries, the global final in February will comprise a three-day trip to London where national champions will undertake a series of challenges.
The winner of this year’s global competition – now in its seventh edition – will not only be crowned Beefeater MIXLDN global champion but will also craft their very own limited-edition Beefeater gin at the distillery in London with master distiller Desmond Payne, who is celebrating 50 years of distilling this month.
Desmond, who is pictured top with Alex, said: “The creativity of the bartenders and the quality of their drinks just gets better and better year on year and, as a result, the job of judging becomes more challenging.
“Alex produced a fine drink with a beautiful balance of flavours – the judges’ unanimous favourite – and a good story about Beefeater 24, his favoured gin. I wish him every success against the international competition at the finals in February.”
