UK bars celebrate a cocktail classic with Old Fashioned Week

0

Bars around the UK are getting ready to join a global celebration of a classic cocktail with the return of Old Fashioned Week from November 2 to 11.

After the success of its first year, it has recruited even more bars in the UK for 2017 as part of its ambition to have more than 600 venues taking part globally this year.

In the UK, over 140 bars are taking part across the country. See below for a list.

Recruiting the bars was led by an “embassy” of top spirits experts, encouraging them to come up with innovative, original, premium and daringly different spins on an Old Fashioned. The UK’s ambassador is leading rum expert Peter Holland of TheFloatingRumShack.

For 2017, Old Fashioned Week has six partners internationally: Angostura Bitters, Havana Club rum, Altos tequila (for US activities), JM Agricole Rhum from Martinique, Monkey Shoulder scotch whisky and Wild Turkey bourbon.

Participating bars are required to serve Old Fashioneds using at least two of the partner brands but, beyond that, they can freely use their other regular listed spirits. Recipes can be controversial so gin is not out of the question.

Bars are organising special events and promotions, publicised via Old Fashioned Week’s website at www.old-fashioned-week.com and its social media channels such as @OldFWeek on Twitter.

For Wild Turkey, a Turkey Hunt is being organised for consumers around bars in Edinburgh, Manchester and London. When ordering an Old Fashioned with Wild Turkey 101 whiskey, guests will receive a sticker. One they have collected stickers from at least three different bars, they can submit the completed “storybook” for a chance to win a trip to Kentucky.

The bar that drums up the most support on social media will also be in with a chance of winning a trip to the home of Wild Turkey in Kentucky. To increase their chances, they can encourage guests to post a picture of their Wild Turkey 101 Old Fashioned on social media, geotagging the bar in their posts, using the hashtag #101oldfashioned or the social media handles @wildturkey_uk for Instagram and wildturkeyuk for Facebook. By doing this, guests will have a chance of winning one of Wild Turkey’s daily prizes. Bars can join the “Friends of Wild Turkey” Facebook group to monitor their progress on the daily social barometer.

Cyrille Hugon, co-founder and director of Old Fashioned Week, said: “Old Fashioned Week is a celebration of cocktail heritage and bartenders’ skills, and also encourages fresh thinking, innovation, and convivial drinking.”
