Aberdeen bartender wins Don Papa Rum cocktail competition

Aberdeen bartender Shea Campbell will be heading to the Philippines after winning a national cocktail competition with Don Papa Rum.

He was awarded the title of Don of Cocktails for triumphing in the #Sugarlandia final against seven other bartenders.

The bartenders were challenged to create an original serve from ingredients and props revealed to them on the evening and inspired by the story of Sugarlandia: the island in the Philippines where Don Papa is made.

Shea, from Orchid in Aberdeen, won with his cocktail Oro Negro which combined rum with fortified wine, plant stem, bananas peel, pineapple shrub using unripe aged balsamic, ripe cranberries and Picon Amer. This was served in a coupette with a grapefruit twist to a blindfolded panel of judges.

The judges included Don Papa global ambassador Matthias Cadéac d’Arbaud and drinks and travel writer Kate Rowe.

Shea will go to the Philippines for a Cocktail Roadshow with Don Papa, involving guest appearances at key local hotspots such as Finders Keepers, Rocket Room and the Fairmont. Craig Robertson from Lincoln’s The Strait & Narrow came a close second, followed by Amy Sinclair from Sohe Restaurant in Newcastle in third place.
