Angostura to support limited-release rum with bartender events

Angostura Rum No 1 French Oak Bottle

A new limited-edition rum from Trinidad & Tobago is to be launched by Angostura in the UK, supported by a trade training tour around the country.

Angostura Rum No 1 Once Used French Oak is a 16-year-old blend of rums aged for at least 10 years in American oak casks which – for the first time – are then matured for a further six years in French oak casks that previously held cognac.

UK distributor Cellar Trends is taking pre-orders now for the rum ahead of the first shipments arriving in December. It is the second release from The House of Angostura’s Cask Collection Range of limited editions.

John Georges, master distiller for Angostura rum, will visit the UK for an extensive training tour for bar staff, including sessions in Manchester, Leeds, London and Glasgow, in the autumn.

The new rum will also be part of the range presented by The House of Angostura at a pop-up for London Cocktail Week which runs from October 5 to 11. Based at the London Cocktail Week Village at Old Spitalfields Market throughout the festival, it will offer tastings for the trade and consumers led by John with Angostura UK brand ambassador Sean Duprey.

Rums will include Angostura 1824 Limited Reserve 12 Year Old and the Angostura 1919 8 Year Old rums plus a very limited quantity of the Angostura Rum No 1 Once Used French Oak.

Two heats and the final of the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge for bartenders will also take place at The House of Angostura pop-up. The winner will progress to represent the UK at the global finals in Trinidad in February 2016 during carnival. The global winner receives US$10,000 and a contract to be Angostura global brand ambassador.

John Georges will also host a distilling and ageing master class at UK RumFest at ILEC in west London on October 17. It will feature the Angostura Flavour Wheel and the Rum Map that RumFest founder and global rum ambassador Ian Burrell developed for Angostura. Details at

Out of the total distillation of only 15,030 bottles, 1,800 bottles of Angostura Rum No 1 Once Used French Oak will be reserved for release in the UK in December.

The rum, suitable for sipping neat or over ice, is bottled at 40% ABV. The ageing in ex-cognac French oak casks infuses it with luxurious oak-driven flavours of nuts, dried fruit such as dates and figs, and subtle floral qualities.

The medium-bodied, amber rum has superb clarity and an aroma of subtle peach and candied apricot, macadamia and almonds, with hints of oak. The finish is dry with a soft fade.

The 70cl bottle, recommended for sale in retail for £89.99, has a royal purple and gold label and comes in a matching cylinder gift box.

The first limited-edition release in the Cask Collection in 2013 was the No 1 First Fill Bourbon rum which was aged in charred oak first-fill bourbon casks.

Craig Chapman, marketing manager for Angostura at Cellar Trends, said: “The UK trade and spirits connoisseurs have an increasing appetite for artisan rums. The first rum in the Cask Collection in 2013 sold out fast, so we think this new Angostura Rum No 1 Once Used French Oak will be keenly sought after.”

John added: “We are sharing the Cask Collection with rum aficionados and enthusiasts worldwide to show that the craft of rum-making has no limits.”
