Appleton Estate issues ‘Discovery’ cocktail challenge

Apppleton Estate rumsA nationwide competition has been launched for Appleton Estate rums offering a bar team of up to four people the prize of a trip to Jamaica.

Running from October 1 to November 30, distributor J Wray & Nephew UK is challenging bartenders to create a cocktail based on the concept of “Discovery”.

The drinks will be based on how they match the theme as well as sales of the cocktail in the bar, the taste of the serve, presentation and the mixologists’ reasons why their serve should win.

The top six bartenders from across the UK will present their serve at the final in January, with the winner’s bar team – up to four people – flying to Jamaica. The five runners-up will each win a trip for one person to Jamaica.

To enter, bartenders wishing to take part must attend a local Discover Rum Roadshow talk. They then need to create a cocktail with the concept of “Discovery” using at least 30ml of Appleton Estate V/X.

The cocktail needs to be sold in the bar for eight weeks during October to November, with bars assessed on the percentage uplift in sales of Appleton Estate rums within the total spirits category within the outlet. There will also be visits from mystery shoppers.

One bar will win in each region of the UK, with six winners in total. The team from the winning bar will attend the final held in the Appleton Estate Rum Bus (pictured below) over two days in January, with the trip to Jamaica later in 2014.

Any bar taking part must stock Appleton Estate V/X, eight-year-old and 12-year-old rums. It will also need to supply figures for Appleton Estate rum and total spirit sales for previous months for comparison.

The bar’s “Discovery” cocktail must be listed on their cocktail menu, specials menu or blackboard for eight weeks during the promotion. Additional support will be given with perfect serve cocktail cards to boost sales.
