Auchentoshan gives bartenders chance to ‘switch’ with American bar

Bartenders in the UK will have a chance to swap jobs and work in a bar in North America in the third Auchentoshan Switch.

Launched today (June 30), the competition is seeking a bartender from the UK and the rest of Europe to “switch” continents, challenging them to create a new cocktail with Auchentoshan Three Wood whisky.

The winner will spend two weeks working in a bar in North America – still to be decided – while the competition in the US and Canada will select a bartender to work at leading London bar Mr Fogg’s.

Rhona Fyfe, brand manager for Auchentoshan, said: “Auchentoshan Switch has grown from strength to strength over the past three years and we are delighted with the huge number of entries it receives each year, as well as the fabulously inventive cocktails that are made too.

“This year we are hoping to create a bigger better competition than previously and we’re excited to bring this once-in-a-lifetime experience to our supportive bartending community once again.”

Last year’s European winner was Aidan Bowie (pictured) of Glasgow’s Blythswood Square Hotel who won a chance to work in The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog in New York City – one of the world’s best bars. Click here for a report on last year’s competition.

Speaking at today’s launch at Mr Fogg’s in Mayfair, Aidan said: “It was a fantastic experience. I met industry legends and got to make drinks for people I’ve read books about.”

While he was there, The Dead Rabbit served up his winning cocktail, the Faff and a Half, which mixed the Auchentoshan with lemon juice, peach puree, honey ginger syrup and Amer Picon bitter, topped with a ginger and lemon foam.

This year’s competition is open to all bartenders in the UK and throughout Europe as well as the US and Canada.

To enter, bartenders are asked to create their best Auchentoshan Three Wood cocktail and upload the recipe and an image of their creation at Entries will be accepted from July 1 to August 19, 2014.

Once the official entry period ends, a panel of judges will vote to name the semi-finalists. These successful candidates will be notified by August 28, 2014, and invited to attend regional heats within their respective countries between September 8 and October 8, 2014, where finalists will be chosen.

The finalists from each of the regional heats will then battle it out at the grand final which will be held in London on October 30 to find the Auchentoshan Switch Champion for Europe. The winners from Europe and the US will switch continents in June 2015.
