Bartenders have been challenged to create their own bitters using new-make spirit for a chance to be involved in making a limited-edition Auchentoshan single malt whisky.
The brand’s team at Beam Global have developed the New Malt Order initiative where 12 winners from around the world will be chosen to work collectively to create a new release for the on-trade.
The expression, due to be launched in 2017, will include unique cask selections that reflect each bartender’s character and the experiences that have shaped their identity.
The limited release is intended to showcase the New Malt Order’s collective personality in both its tasting profile and product design, encapsulating the essence of what makes them different.
The new annual competition follows the success of the Auchentoshan Switch which set bartenders a series of challenges for the chance to win a trip to another city to work shifts at a world-class bar.
Beam Global has already selected 240 bartenders from the UK, Germany, Sweden, Canada and the USA, who have been sent a kit which will allow them to develop their own unique bitters using Auchentoshan new-make spirit. They will also have to explain how the bitters can be used for their own personal take on the brand’s signature Auchentoshan & Ale serve. See below for the recipe.
The 12 members chosen for the New Malt Order will be flown to the home of Auchentoshan in Glasgow for a five-day masterclass and immersion into the city’s creative culture, including a session held by master blender Rachel Barrie.
After visiting some of Glasgow’s most inspirational and pioneering businesses to meet the entrepreneurial owners shaking up their industries, each bartender will be guided through a unique experimental blending of Auchentoshan’s maturing whiskies so they can make their mark on the limited-edition single malt.

“The New Malt Order is synonymous with what the bartending community strives to achieve – a collaboration of innovators inspired not just by food and drink but also by the cultural areas of music, art and literature.

The aim is to recognise and reward “dynamic spirits explorers” who push the boundaries of cocktail ingenuity. The winners need to strive to break the mould, encompassing the spirit of Distilled Different – the brand’s new campaign which celebrates Auchentoshan’s unique character as Glasgow’s only single malt and its unique status as Scotland’s only single malt whisky that is triple distilled to the very last drop.

Auchentoshan & Ale
35ml Auchentoshan American Oak
25ml Fresh lemon juice
25ml Honey syrup
90ml Citrus pale ale
Lemon wedge to garnish
Combine Auchentoshan, lemon juice and honey syrup in a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a vessel, with or without ice. Top up with a citrus pale ale and garnish with a lemon wedge.
