Leading consultancy Fling Bar Services has opened a bartender training school in Leeds, offering courses to help people develop a career in cocktail bartending.

The Fling Bar School will be run from The Maven bar in Call Lane and is accredited by the United Kingdom Bartenders’ Guild (UKBG). It will teach skills from drink-making techniques and classic cocktails through to competition bartending, supported by on-the-job experience.

There are a variety of courses available, from a one-day course for home enthusiasts and those looking to test the water, to a five-day in-depth programme with assessed, accredited certification.

Fling Bar Services was created in 2003 by Andrew Mullins and Matthew Wilkinson and has delivered bar training, development and consultancy programmes in over 50 countries, including working with top hotel brands such as Raffles, Conrad, St Regis, Four Seasons, Hilton, and Dubai’s seven-star Burj al Arab.

Matthew said: “The aim is to give a fun, educational and practical experience, but ultimately we want to see our students find employment and go on to have a great career in hospitality.

“We are in a golden age for cocktails, and bars are constantly looking for passionate, trained staff, both in the UK and around the world.”

“We are limiting the number of students on any one course to 10 so that the learning experience is focused, engaging and great value for money. At the end of it, we have the local and international connections to help our students get a job.

“Despite having one of the most vibrant bar scenes in the country, Leeds isn’t catered for with a professional bar school. Andrew and I began our bar careers in Yorkshire and went on to work all over the world, we want to give the same opportunity to the next generation of bartenders.”
