Bar owners, mixologists and distillers join Gin Guild

The Founding Companies of The Gin GuildBartenders, brand ambassadors and distillers from the UK are among the latest new members admitted to the elite Gin Guild.

The guild, which was established last year by the Worshipful Company of Distillers, has installed 19 new people from the industry because of their work on developing and promoting the gin category.

They include Alessandro Palazzi, head bartender at Dukes Bar at Dukes Hotel in St James’s, London, which is world famous for its Martinis and gin selection.

Former bartender Sam Carter, UK brand ambassador for Bombay Sapphire, and Tanqueray’s global brand ambassador Barrie Wilson are also among the new members.

Gin producers joining the guild include Jonathan Clark, who owns City of London Distillery and bar in London, Sam Galsworthy, the co-founder of Sipsmith in west London, and John McCarthy, head distiller at Adnams in Suffolk.

Other gin owners added to the membership are Jean-Sébastien Robicquet, founder of EWG Spirits & Wine and creator of G’vine Gin, Marcelino Piquero of Fifty Pound gin, and Baron Carl Jacob Ehrenkrona, chief executive of the Reformed Spirit Company which owns Martin Miller’s gin.

Others based in the UK include Ian Harris, chief executive of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, and John Barnes, a liveryman with the Worshipful Company of Distillers who is an adviser to distillers and the board of The Gin Guild.

They were installed at an event led by distiller Christopher Hayman, grand rectifier of The Gin Guild, which brings together gin distillers and industry leaders involved in the production, promotion, distribution and consumption of gin to promote and encourage excellence in the category.

Hayman, who is chairman of Hayman Distillers, said: “We are delighted to welcome our new members to the Guild and are thrilled with the calibre of new entrants who applied to become members. It is truly an honour to be a part of the Guild, which represents the best of the trade, as entry is strictly for those who uphold the Guild’s values of excellence.

“We aim to promote the gin category across the globe, celebrating its heritage and helping others to recognise what makes a great-quality gin. As we start our second year, we already have an incredible wealth of knowledge and passion within the Guild, which will undoubtedly help us to fulfil our aims.”

Membership is open to a range of gin trade players and The Gin Guild welcomes support and participation from new members. There are various classes of membership – from founder wardens who were appointed by each of the four founding companies – to warden rectifiers who include distillers, producers and brand owners, and rectifiers who have roles in the wider gin industry, including leading bartenders, journalists, marketing experts and educators.
