Bar owners make it to list of London’s 1,000 most influential

The people behind some of London’s leading bars have been included in the Evening Standard’s list of the capital’s 1,000 most influential people.

It features Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling, the founders of Inception Group which operates Mr Fogg’s, Maggie’s, Disco, Barts, Bunga Bunga and Cocobananas and is about to open Beaver Lodge in Chelsea.

They are listed alongside bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana who has co-founded two London cocktail bars in the past year, White Lyan in Hoxton and Dandelyan at the South Bank’s new Mondrian at Sea Containers hotel.

He is joined on the list by another bartender, Matt Whiley, who heads the team behind cocktail bar Peg + Patriot bar at the Old Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green.

Another multiple operator on the list is Steve Ball (pictured), founder of The Columbo Group, which runs venues such as Paradise By Way of Kensal Green, XOYO in Shoreditch, The Nest in Dalston and The Blues Kitchen bars in Camden and Shoreditch.

Michael and Charlotte Sager-Wilde have been included on the list for transforming the wine bar scene in London with Sager & Wilde in Hackney Road and their second site, Mission, in Bethnal Green.

Also among the list of 1,000 most influential Londoners are Nick Jones, founder of Soho House Group, club entrepreneur Guy Pelly of Tonteria, Robin Birley of members club 5 Hertford Street and Sam Galsworthy, co-founder of Sipsmith Distillery in Chiswick.

Restaurateurs on the list, which was published on Friday, include Des Gunewardena
and David Loewi who head bar and restaurant group D&D London.

Other restaurateurs and chefs include Nuno Mendes, André Balazs, Jamie Oliver, Christopher Corbin, Jeremy King, Russell Norman, Karam and Jyotin Sethi, Dan Doherty, Richard Caring, Heston Blumenthal, Ollie Dabous, Fergus Henderson, Ruth Rogers, Jason Atherton, Matt Hill, Des McDonald and Jackson Boxer.
