Bars and drinks brands are set to celebrate this week with events and special menus for the first-ever Cardiff Cocktail Week.
Running from today to April 24, it features events across the city, from tutored masterclasses to supper menus, from spirits tastings to tiki takeovers. It is being run in partnership with Pernod Ricard UK.
Events will be taking place at bars and restaurants including 10 Feet Tall, Lab 22, The Dead Canary, Ten Mill Lane, 29 Park Place, Wahaca, Chapel 1877, Peppermint Bar and CF24 Project. All participating bars will be showcasing a special cocktail for £5 all week.

Monday April 18
The Cardiff Cocktail Club present a masterclass with Sipsmith Independent Spirits, hosted by industry legend Jared Brown in 10 Feet Tall. This will be followed by a competition in which Cardiff’s best bartenders will battle it out to be crowned winner. The masterclass starts at 3pm, with the competition expected to start just after 5pm.
The Dead Canary will be showcasing a range of five Akashi-Tai sake and sochu, all matched with delicious food. It starts at 7pm. To book, visit the events page on www.thedeadcanary.co.uk.
At Lab 22, enjoy Prohibition-style cocktails while listening to sensuous jazz during Moonshine at Lab22. 8pm to late.
Tuesday April 19
Becherovka Original at Ten Mill Lane and The Dead Canary. At 1.30pm UK brand ambassador and cocktail hero Roman Foltán, formerly of London’s Artesian Bar, will be talking about the Czech liqueur Becherovka at Ten Mill Lane. From 5pm, he will be guest bartending behind the bar at The Dead Canary, showcasing this Becherovka cocktail menu.
29 Park Place will be celebrating National Amaretto Day with a special Disaronno cocktail along with a dessert created by their chefs which will be available for one week only.
Wahaca Cardiff will be teaming up with Del Maguey single-village mezcal to bring you a tasting of the extra-special Del Maguey Vida Mezcal. Guests will also receive a cocktail on arrival and enjoy a two-for-one offer on Margaritas all night long.
Join the CF24 Project and Black Cow vodka for an evening of competitions, “naughty” milkshakes, and cocktails. Mini cheese burger sliders made with Black Cow’s Vintage Cheddar Cheese, made from the curds of the milk, will be served. Cocktails will be £5 each.
Wednesday April 20
Between 2pm and 4pm, Ten Mill Lane will be hosting brand ambassador Nicci Stringfellow to talk you through el Jimador and Herradura tequilas with a tasting too. From 7pm until 9pm, Ten Mill Lane will be serving up ice cream and tequila with a special menu designed for the night.
Glenfiddich will be with the team at The Dead Canary with an evening supper menu matched with five of their whiskies. Proceedings start at 7pm. Bookings can be made through the events page on www.thedeadcanary.co.uk.
Peppermint Bar will host the launch of Koval whiskeys from the first distillery in Chicago since Prohibition. Starting at 5pm, Emporia Brands’ Alexander Taylor will talk you through sampling the whole range, including the Single Barrel Bourbon, the single grain Rye, the intriguing Millet whiskey and the floral Dry Gin.
The team from Her Majesty’s Secret Service in Bristol will be taking over 10 Feet Tall’s upstairs bar from 9pm until late. The masters of word play will be serving peculiar serves and banging drinks.
Thursday April 21
10 Feet Tall brings you a decadent evening of first-class chocolate liqueurs and spirits from the Mozart Spirits distillery in Austria. Not only will you indulge in chocolate heaven, but they’ll be all matched with food. Tickets available through www.10feettall.co.uk.
At The Dead Canary from 7pm, Liam Sparks from Pernod Ricard UK’s Authentic Brand Company will host a tasting of exceptional Irish whiskeys from the Midleton distillery. In association with Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands, The Dead Canary presents an event dripping in British cocktail history when the team from The Savoy’s Iconic American Bar will be stepping behind the bar. Joseph Lewis-White and Manu Alonso Caballo, in their signature white jackets, will showcase their glamorous, world-famous Art Deco bar before presenting a selection of drinks from their new menu. They will be there from 3pm to 7pm.
Friday April 22
Ten Mill Lane is hosting an afternoon of whisky tasting, with five whiskies from Japan, Ireland, Scotland, the US and Canada. It will be accompanied by a masterclass and some other little treats. Ten Mill Lane has also created a mini tapas menu alongside the whiskies.
Friday night brings a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament with £5 cocktails exclusive to Cardiff Cocktail Week at Chapel 1877. It will take place downstairs in the Vault Room. Only 16 spaces are available. £10 buy in.
Saturday April 23
What better way to spend the day on Saturday than with High Tea at 10 Feet Tall courtesy of Beefeater Gin. Sandwiches and cakes will be paired with Beefeater Gin cocktails. They will be served between 12pm and 5pm.
Sunday April 24
29 Park Place will be hosting Alexander Jeffreys with a tasting of some fine gins, vermouths, and more, all from the exceptional Sacred Microdistillery. Don’t miss the bottle-aged Negroni? The tasting starts at 2pm. To save your spot, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Spirits specialist Mangrove with be taking over the menu at The Dead Canary from 5pm, bringing you cocktails showcasing their brands, conjured up by brand ambassador Nathan Sorby and his outlandish and eccentric mind. Be warned, the garnish game will be strong.
One Love Sunday Sessions will be at Peppermint Bar all day, bringing you the finest Caribbean cuisine and roots reggae in a relaxed setting. The fried chicken is epic.
10 Feet Tall will be carrying the tiki torch and taking Cardiff by tropical storm, collaborating with Plantation Rum to bring you cocktails from £5, 25% off shots of rum, and “all the fire”. Get your best Hawaiian shirt on from 5pm till late. Think Mai Tais, Zombies, Hurricanes, Painkillers and Scorpions.
