Bars across UK to celebrate calvados with cocktails and events

Bars across the UK are preparing for a week-long celebration of France’s apple brandy, calvados, with events, food pairings and cocktails.

Running from Sunday October 26 to Saturday November 1, National Calvados Week has been co-ordinated by Emporia Brands, which champions the category through its brand Père Magloire.

Special cocktails made with calvados will be available throughout the week at bars and restaurants in Edinburgh such as Panda & Sons, The Voodoo Rooms, The Bon Vivant Thistle Street, Hotel Bia Bistro and Bond No 9 in Leith.

In Glasgow, calvados cocktails will be on the menu all week at Blue Dog while Distill bar will be hosting a Halloween calvados party, with apple bobbing, alongside a week-long special menu. Booly Mardy’s will have a special calvados menu on October 26 while The Finnieston will pair calvados cocktails with seafood all week.

The Kelvingrove Café will not only offer a special calvados menu, with calvados-inspired food dishes partnered with calvados cocktails, but it is also hosting a party for consumers and the trade with the theme of “Dress like a Frenchman” on October 26.

At 56 North in Edinburgh, calvados mixed drinks will be made with Fever-Tree and Fentiman’s soft drinks, complementing the food menu such as the bar’s calvados pork belly. It will also offer a selection of Halloween-themed calvados cocktails inspired by toffee apples.

Bistro Provençe in Edinburgh will host a calvados feast, with a three-course meal and calvados pairing, on October 31. All week it will offer a trou Normand, a sorbet made with apple and calvados, on its evening menu.

Clouds & Soil in Edinburgh will hold a calvados dinner on October 30, featuring calvados cocktails, with calvados dishes and cocktails available all week from October 26.

Iris Restaurant in Edinburgh will offer food dishes with calvados all week while La Garrigue in Edinburgh is hosting a calvados dinner on October 29 alongside a special menu all week.

Ducks at Kilspindie in Aberlady will offer a calvados menu and cocktails this weekend while Heads & Tales in Edinburgh will offer calvados cocktails paired with charcuterie and cheese all week.

At Le Di-Vin in Edinburgh, a selection of fine, VSOP and XO calvados will be available all week as well as calvados cocktails and spiced apple and calvados crepes and coffee from October 26.

Roseleaf Bar Café in Leith will serve up pork fillet medallions wrapped in smoky bacon, with a fondant tattie, sauteed savoy cabbage and a Bramley apple and Père Magloire VSOP calvados jus followed by a calvados liqueur affogato.

In London, special calvados drinks menus will be available all week at Apples & Pears near Brick Lane, Baranis in Chancery Lane, Coq d’Argent in the City, Drunken Monkey in Shoreditch, Lockside Lounge in Camden, Mahiki in Mayfair, the Old Bengal Bar near Liverpool Street, Perkin Reveller by the Tower of London, Schrub & Shutter in Brixton, Skylon on the South Bank and Trailer Happiness in Notting Hill.

At Cigalon in Chancery Lane, the French House in Soho and Mint Leaf at Bank, calvados cocktails will be available on October 27. The Royal Exchange Grand Café & Sauterelle restaurant in the City will offer calvados cocktails on October 26.

The Mango Tree bar and restaurant in Victoria will run a special calvados cocktail and XO calvados digestif offer all week.

At The Beach Hotel in Bude, Cornwall, there will be a calvados menu including an aperitif cocktail in the bar and restaurant, where calvados will also be used in sauces and desserts. In Brighton, a special calvados drinks menu will be available at Hotel Pelirocco all week.

National Calvados Week is also supported by retailers such as Gerry’s Wine & Spirits, Hedonism Wines, John Lewis Oxford Street and Vintage House in London, Corks Out Wine Shops in the north-west, Vino Wine Shops in Edinburgh, Fenwick’s in Newcastle upon Tyne, Mitchell’s Wines and The Dram Shop in Sheffield, Wine Rack stores in the south-east, and Maes-Y-Lili Vintry in Gorslas, Llanelli. Nationally, it will be supported by a special promotion on Père Magloire in Waitrose stores.
