Britain’s bars are ready to mark the Wimbledon tennis tournament with special drinks, promotional activities, themed outdoor spaces and even by changing their look.
Moments from Centre Court, Mitchells & Butlers has transformed All Bar One in Wimbledon into All Bar Wimble One until July 12. A giant tennis racket and tennis balls have been fixed to the exterior alongside the new signage. The games are all being played on large screens inside.
The venue’s garden has been transformed into a “Pimm’s paradise”, decked out in red and white candy stripes, bunting, white picket fencing and boxed planters of fresh mint dotted. The bar is also serving Match Point Pimm’s, at £4.95, which uses the new Pimm’s Strawberry With a Hint of Mint mixed with prosecco plus a strawberry and fresh mint garnish.
M Restaurants in the City of London is celebrating Wimbledon with tennis-themed cocktails with names such as the Murray Martini, the Federer Fizz, the Nadal Negroni and the Djokovic Daiquiri. It will also be showing key matches in the bar, where a turfed area will help you feel you are watching the action from the stands in SW19. In its Secret Den members’ room, guests can enjoy a private screening of matches with their own bartender and food.
At The Imperial in King’s Road, London, the garden has undergone a makeover to become Chelsea’s own Murray Mound with a specially laid lawn, a big-screen TV and a dedicated outside bar. Special limited-edition drinks will be available such as a Bloom Gin Summer Cup and a Britz Spritz on the bar’s summer spritzer menu.
Drake & Morgan’s bar The Refinery in Bankside has transformed the outside terrace with deck chairs, white picket fencing, warm rugs for the evenings and a large screen for watching Wimbledon and other sporting events until October 31. It follows the success of the terrace last year (pictured above).
A special Wimbledon cocktail, Strawberry Fields, is available at The Refinery and Drake & Morgan’s seven other bars in London: The Folly, The Fable, The Parlour, The Happenstance, The Drift, The Anthologist and The Refinery at Regent’s Place. Priced at £8.50, it is made by shaking 40ml of Hennessy cognac with four muddled strawberries, 15ml of gomme and three dashes of Peychaud’s Bitters, served with a jar of cream on the side.
In time for Wimbledon, Grain Store in King’s Cross has introduced a Strawberry and Green Grass Bellini developed by leading bartender Tony Conigliaro and his team at The Drinks Factory. It is made from pureed strawberries with added green grass essence and topped up with prosecco, priced £8.50. The bar and restaurant is close to Cubitt Square where Wimbledon will be projected onto a large screen.
To celebrate Wimbledon this year, Bibendum restaurant in Chelsea has brought the trim lawns of the tennis court into its Oyster Bar including a ticketed screening of the Men’s Final on July 12. Throughout the tournament, the bar will serve The Centre Court, a cocktail made with gin, raspberries and fragrant rose.
At the tennis tournament at the All English Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon itself, the hospitality offering includes The Gatsby Club provided by events group Keith Prowse and run by bar and events specialist Mix Global.
The cocktail list includes the Gatsby Club house cocktail featuring fresh raspberry syrup, orange bitters, fresh lemon and Bombay Sapphire gin. It joins another drink that was a hit at The Gatsby Club last year, the Wimbledon Cup (pictured below), combining fresh strawberries, cucumber, lemon, fresh mint, Martini Rosso, Bombay Sapphire, a spritz of tonic and a top of ginger ale.
Mix Global founder and managing director Huw Lloyd said: “We shall be serving anything up to 700 people per day, from when the club opens at 11am through to the close of play. In addition to the two signature cocktails we’ve devised, we shall also be offering a full range of classic cocktails, along with a number of gin and tonic twists, which customers can help design, including the Earl Grey-infused Bombay Sapphire G&Tea.”
With the theme of “Tennis in an English garden”, The Gatsby Club will be staffed by hostesses in outfits styled by Ted Baker while the food menu has been designed by legendary chef Albert Roux.
New London Dry citrus vodka NB Vodka was served at this year’s Wimbledon Live event in London on Friday which featured both tennis players and live music. Guests enjoyed drinks including a Strawberry Deuce, a refreshing cocktail made with NB Vodka, fresh strawberries, tonic water, ice, and a dusting of black pepper.
