Bars in Edinburgh and London reach shortlist for international awards

Bars in London and Edinburgh are once again among the world’s best in the top 10 shortlist for this year’s international Spirited Awards.

Nominees include newer bars such as Coupette, The Mint Gun Club, Cub, Scout, and Waeska Bar at The Mandrake hotel while more established names make it back into the top 10 such as The Savoy’s American Bar and The Connaught Bar. Dukes Bar at Dukes Hotel has also joined the list of nominees.

Other familiar names in the running for 2018 include Happiness Forgets, Callooh Callay, Oriole, Scarfes Bar at Rosewood London, Swift, The Gibson, Three Sheets, Dandelyan, Super Lyan, Hawksmoor Spitalfields, Blind Pig, Sager & Wilde, Sexy Fish, The Clove Club and both Punch Room and The Lobby Bar at London Edition.

The top 10 for international bartender of the year includes Marcis Dzelzainis from Sager & Wilde, Chris Moore from Coupette and Rémy Savage from Artesian at The Langham. UK bartenders are also on the shortlist for best writing including Rich Woods and Tristan Stephenson.

Only one UK bar outside of London made it into the top 10 lists: Panda & Sons in Edinburgh.

Nominees for the global award for best mentor include Ryan Chetiyawardana of Mr Lyan, whose bars include Super Lyan, Cub and Dandelyan in London, Alex Kratena of Pour, and Dre Masso.

The shortlist was chosen from over 1,000 unique nominees from people around the world. Each nominee was reviewed in detail to ensure it met the criteria and then presented by ballot to the committee judges. A diverse, international panel of over 150 judges’ votes came up with this year’s top 10 nominees.

The top four finalists for each category will be announced on June 22. The winners will be announced at the Spirited Awards on July 21 in New Orleans, held as part of the international Tales of the Cocktail festival. Visit for details about the event.

It will include an award for world’s best bar, sponsored by Italicus Rosolio de Bergamotto, which will be based on winners of the US and international categories of cocktail bar, restaurant bar, hotel bar and high-volume bar. There will also be a lifetime achievement award presented by William Grant & Sons.
