Bars around the UK are set to celebrate National Absinthe Day tomorrow, March 5, with special cocktails and promotions.
Absente Absinthe from French producer Distilleries et Domaine de Provence has teamed up with bartenders with support from its UK distributor Emporia Brands.
Riddles Bar in Altrincham, south Manchester, will be offering Absente Absinthe boards (pictured) for just £6, encouraging customers to sample and learn about the often-misunderstood spirit. Click here to read their blog post about the spirit.
Absinthe’s place in the classic Sazerac cocktail will be championed at NOLA Bar in London, which is home to bartender Ian McIntyre, London ambassador for Distilleries et Domaine de Provence. Their recipe sees Bulleit Rye whiskey or Hennessy Fine de Cognac stirred down with sugar and bitters and served in an Absente absinthe-rinsed glass.
Bar Boulud at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park hotel in London has come up with The Deal Closer, which brings together Beefeater gin, lavender syrup, Absente Absinthe and huckleberry jam.
Christopher’s Martini Bar in Covent Garden is getting into the French spirit by offering De La Louisienne, combining Wild Turkey 81 whiskey, sweet vermouth, Bénédictine, Peychaud’s Bitters and a dash of Absente Absinthe.
The Pen and Pencil in Manchester’s Northern Quarter will be offering a twist on Ernest Hemingway’s classic Death in the Afternoon that sees the 69% ABV Grande Absente Absinthe mixed with cucumber, apple, lemon juice and sugar, with a fresh top of champagne.
National Absinthe Day will also be celebrated at two other Manchester bars, Albert’s Schloss and Cottonopolis which is home to Gethin Jones, the Manchester ambassador for Distilleries et Domaine de Provence.
Absente Absinthe has preserved the traditional processes of producing artisan spirits. After the ban of absinthe in France in 1914, Absente was introduced in 1995 as the first legal absinthe. At 55% ABV, Absente offers a well-balanced profile with a delicate, fresh aroma and subtle flavours of anise, mint and spice, suitable for many cocktails such as an Absente Smash.
15ml Absente Absinthe
30ml London dry gin
25ml Fresh lemon juice
2 Fresh basil leaves
3 Pineapple chunks
Muddle the pineapple and basil together. Shake all ingredients together and double strain into a Collins glass with basil leaves and a lemon slice to garnish.
