Bartender wins Berlin trip and bar takeover in Sash & Fritz competition

Paul Minea Sash & Fritz

A bartender has won a trip to Bar Convent in Berlin, including his own bar takeover, in the first UK cocktail competition for German vodka Sash & Fritz.

Paul Minea (pictured) of The Vineyard Hotel in Newbury in Berkshire triumphed with The White Pearl of Berlin, combining the vodka with camomile-infused vermouth, Bénédictine and bitters.

Ben Lindsay, editor of the Global Vodka Alliance and one of the judges, said: “The standard of entrants on the day totally exceeded my expectations. Sash & Fritz is a very smooth vodka with delicate flavours and Paul our winner delivered a delicious drink that works brilliantly with these flavours.”

Second place was won by Giancarlo Defelice of Japanese restaurant Sakagura and cocktail bar 8 Heddon Street in Mayfair while Stefan Haneder of Acanto Cocktailbar in Freistadt in Austria came third.

Their cocktails – Take Your Time and Sofa Surfer respectively – were highly praised by the judges which was reflected by the scores as the top three were only separated by a few points.

As the overall winner, Paul will join Sash & Fritz in Berlin to attend Bar Convent, which runs on October 10 and 11, and host an evening bar takeover during the trade show where his winning cocktail will be served all night.
