Bartenders are being invited to create a fresh take on the classic Gin Cocktail created by legendary bartender Jerry Thomas in a competition for No 3 London Dry Gin.

With a range of prizes on offer, it is being run by Maxxium UK, distributor of Berry Bros & Rudd’s premium gin, and ties in with the brand’s summer residency with The Gin Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London (pictured).

Bartenders are being challenged to come up with an “English garden twist” on the Gin Cocktail that Jerry Thomas published in his 1862 book The Bartender’s Guide: How To Mix Drinks.

With the classic combination of sweet, sour, strong, weak and citrus, his recipe used gin, syrup, bitters, curacao liqueur and lemon peel.

The judging panel will shortlist entries and arrange to visit candidates to sample their cocktail before selecting one finalist from each of the following cities: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Bristol, Brighton and London.

The finalists will then face each other at a grand final on September 29. For entry criteria, visit facebook.com/No3Gin. The deadline for entries is August 22.

First prize is lunch with a friend in Berry Bros & Rudd’s private Directors’ Dining Room in St James’s, London, followed by No 3 Gin Martinis at the renowned Dukes Hotel and free tickets to a show of your choice at the Royal Albert Hall and five-star accommodation at Dukes Hotel.

Second prize is lunch with a friend in Berry Bros & Rudd’s private Directors’ Dining Room in St James’s, London, followed by No 3 Gin Martinis at Dukes Hotel. Third prize is a No 3 Gin goody bag including everything needed to make a perfect No 3 Gin Martini.

Mike Mackenzie, brand manager for No 3 Gin at Maxxium UK, said: “Following the success of last year, the No 3 Gin cocktail competition is back once again to challenge the creative minds of the country’s leading bartenders.”
