Bartenders to face the final challenge with Monin

Monin Studio London

Monin UK is celebrating London Cocktail Week with a host of free events, competitions and master classes including the UK final of the annual bartenders’ Monin Cup.

Other highlights will include the grand final of the Underground Punch Pong League (UPPL) Bartenders Challenge Cup and master classes on smoking cocktails.

The syrup brand has also partnered with bars across the capital for a range of special London Cocktail Week menus, showcasing its range of over 100 flavours.

The UPPL Bartenders Challenge Cup grand final is run by Monin with Plantation rums, taking place at the Arts Theatre near Leicester Square from 7pm on Monday October 6.

Now in its second year, the competition was created by JJ Goodman, co-founder of London Cocktail Club bars. The final, which is open to the public, comes after events around the country where teams of two bartenders faced each other in a tournament in the style of “beer pong”.

Instead of trying to get ping pong balls in cups of beer, the challenge features cups of Black Pearl Punch made using Monin syrups and Plantation rums.

On Monday, the regional winners will compete to be overall UK champions, with the winning pair receiving a complete Punch Pong kit for their bar plus a VIP night out in London for themselves and two other members of their bar team.

The UPPL finalists are:

  • Liam McGarr and Dave Wroe from Boilermaker in Nottingham
  • Ed Shawcross and Katy Rouse from Island Bar in Birmingham
  • Benjamin Campbell and Bosun Ola from The Alchemist bars in Manchester
  • Simon Taylor and Conor O’Hare from 81 Ltd in Liverpool
  • Rob Fuller and Adam Hindley from Oporto in Leeds
  • Stuart Fair and Daniel Slattery from Partick Brewing Co in Glasgow
  • Jay Doy and Sophie Douse from London Cocktail Club in Goodge Street, London
  • John O’Reilly and Anthony Farrell from Love & Death Inc in Belfast

The UK final of the Monin Cup takes place on Tuesday October 7 at the Monin Studio in Hoxton Square, east London, compered by Monin UK brand ambassador James Coston.

The trade-only event will featured finalists from 10 regional heats who will have to make one cocktail with the theme “If the UK was a cocktail…” using any flavour of Monin syrup and their choice of spirit.

The overall winner will go on to represent the UK at the Monin Cup International Final in Paris on December 1, competing against bartenders from all over the world.

The Monin Cup UK finalists are:

  • Dai Wakely from Fancy a Rum? in Cardiff
  • Joe Macbeth from The Lacehouse in Nottingham
  • Jake Mellish from Boilermaker in Nottingham
  • Molly Ross from the Jekyll & Hyde in Birmingham
  • Benjamin Campbell from The Alchemist in Manchester
  • Joe Wild from Jenny’s in Liverpool
  • Kieran Grieves from Whisky River Cocktail Bar in Leeds
  • Danny Whelan from Kelvingrove Café in Glasgow
  • Alastair Fraser from London Cocktail Club near Oxford Circus, London
  • Conor Brennan from Love & Death Inc in Belfast

The Monin Studio (pictured) will also host two three-hour master classes for bartenders run by Monin with dry ice drinks system Jet Chill on Friday October 10 at 11am and 1pm.

Jet Chill directors Colin Myers and Robert Flunder and James Coston will create innovative and exciting cocktails that best demonstrate the machine and how it can increase profitability in a bar, club or restaurant.
