Bartenders triumph in Bloody Mary challenge


Marco Piroli Gareth Evans Charles CampionThe winners have been announced in a competition organised by Tabasco to find the best classic and alternative Bloody Marys.

Taking place at Bar Américain in Brasserie Zedel in London, the judges awarded the trophy for best classic Bloody Mary to Gareth Evans, bar manager at Pollen Street Social in London. Second place went to Lee Hyde of Bar Américain.

Best alternative Bloody Mary was won by Marco Piroli of Lab in Soho, while Ali Reynolds of Hawksmoor came second.

The two winners will enjoy a three-day trip to New Orleans for Tales of The Cocktail 2013.

With 10 bartenders competing, the judges included restaurant critic Charles Campion and leading restaurateur Russell Norman of Polpo, Polpetto and da Polpo. Guests included choreographer Craig Revel Horwood who presented the trophies with Charles Campion to Gareth Evans (above) and Marco Piroli (below).

35ml Absolut vodka
125ml Sundance tomato juice
2 dashes Tabasco Original Red Sauce
15ml Worcestershire sauce
10ml Lemon juice
Pinch of celery salt
Pinch of black pepper

Mix ingredients and throw three times. Serve on a board garnished with a candy striped straw, a small piece of celery, Nocellara olive and a cherry tomato, with a side of heritage tomato salad and horseradish snow.

30ml Garlic-infused vodka
15ml Punt e Mes vermouth
15ml Lemon juice
125ml Tomato juice
Pinch of black pepper, celery salt and sugar
7 drops of Tabasco Original Red Sauce
1 barspoon of balsamic vinegar

Combine all the ingredients in a tin with ice and roll it. Strain into a highball glass. Garnish with a Bovril celery salt and chili flakes rim plus boiled quails egg and soldier.
