Bartenders win trip to Jerez to compete in Harveys challenge

Jerez Harveys sherry

Three bartenders from the UK have been chosen to travel to Jerez in southern Spain to take part in a competition run for Harveys sherry.

They will visit the bodegas and vineyards (pictured) of Harveys, the UK’s number-one sherry brand, and be immersed in the world of the brand hosted by Harveys brand ambassador Maria Eugenia Herrera.

For the Harveys Sherry Remix competition, they have created a new sherry cocktail and will compete for the prize of £500 in cash.

The three who won places in the final stage of the competition are Joe Macbeth of Rub Smokehouse & Bar in Nottingham, Robyn Wilkie of Mash London, and Georgia Billing of Looking Glass Cocktail Club in London.

The competition, organised by Harveys’ distributor Maxxium UK, challenged bartenders to create a Harveys sherry cocktail that is contemporary and encourages today’s UK consumer to discover sherry in a new and exciting way.

Joe’s twist on the Boulevardier, called Sunset Boulevardier, is made with Harveys Amontillado Medium Dry, Harveys Fino, Knob Creek whiskey, Campari infused with maraschino cherry, a homemade smoked and grilled pineapple syrup and cardamom bitters. He created the drink to bridge the gap between classic cocktails and the modern age of contemporary reboots, while evoking the Iberian Peninsula.

Georgia’s Gift of Time features Harveys Fino and Harveys Palo Cortado VORS, pisco, pear juice, homemade spice syrup and lemon juice. Designed for sharing, the cocktail is a version of white sangria that can be enjoyed at a barbecue with friends and family.

Robyn created a cocktail inspired by the flavour profile of Harveys Amontillado called Caballo Cartunjano (meaning Carthusian horse), named after the horses that are part of the culture in Jerez. It is made with sherry, lemon juice, coconut orgeat and absinthe.

Janice McIntosh, Maxxium UK’s marketing controller for Harveys, said: “The high calibre of entries in the Remix competition has been incredibly inspiring. Harveys Remix is challenging bartenders to come up with new ways to serve the UK’s number-one sherry and encourage consumers to get excited about our award-winning range of sherry.

“By holding the final in Jerez, we are giving three talented bartenders the unique opportunity to be fully immersed in the brand and its heritage. We are thrilled with the calibre of entries and delighted to welcome Joe, Robyn and Georgia to the home of Harveys.”

Sunset Boulevardier by Joe Macbeth
35ml Harveys Amontillado Medium Dry
15ml Harveys Fino Sherry
35ml Knob Creek bourbon
20ml Maraschino cherry-infused Campari
20ml Homemade smoked and grilled pineapple syrup
2 dashes of Cardamom bitters
Prepare in a mixing glass. Stir down both sherries, bourbon, bitters and Campari over cubed ice until chilled. Strain over ice balls into an Old Fashioned glass. Float homemade smoked and grilled pineapple syrup over the top so the drink sits red on the bottom and yellow on top. This should create a sunset effect. Garnish with a sprig of thyme pegged to the glass and a maraschino cherry and pineapple slice on a bamboo skewer.
