Bartenders win trips to Mexico with ‘perfectionist’ cocktails

Patron Perfectionist

Dean Shury from London’s Chiltern Firehouse is off to Mexico after winning a competition challenging bartenders across the UK to invent a Patrón Tequila cocktail “worthy of a perfectionist”.

He impressed judges with an aperitif, Providence, which combined Patrón Silver tequila, Dolin dry vermouth, herbes de Provence and olive soda, garnished with fresh lavender and an olive over cut ice.

It was judged to be the best drink that demonstrated how bartenders can put “the same passion and care into crafting their cocktails as Patrón do when creating their handcrafted tequila”.

Dean said: “I wanted to create a tequila cocktail which could be drank as an aperitif. This drink is light, refreshing with a slight savoury note, and the notes of the tequila really come through the drink. For me this is a classic in the making.”

The competition, which attracted entries from around the UK, had its final in the Punch Room bar at the London Edition hotel over a month ago. It was organised by Patrón Tequila, distributed by Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands.

Dean wins an all-expenses-paid luxury trip to the Hacienda Patrón – Patrón Tequila’s distillery in the highlands of Jalisco in Mexico. The winning cocktail will also feature as a limited-edition special serve at Chiltern Firehouse, the exclusive bar and restaurant in Marylebone.

Second place went to Robyn Wilkie from Mash London, whose entry was judged to be so compelling that she also won a trip to Mexico. Her Hacienda cocktail combined Patrón Silver, lemon juice, thyme and fennel syrup and kümmel, topped with an apple crisp and lemon zest.

Robyn and Dean are pictured above with the third-place winner, Sophie Bratt from Oxo Tower Restaurant, Bar & Brasserie in London.

Each of the 10 finalists were also awarded with engraved bottles from the Gran Patrón product line including Gran Patrón Piedra for second place and Gran Patrón Burdeos for third place.

The 10 finalists were judged by a panel of industry professionals including Sandrae Lawrence of The Cocktail Lovers magazine, Iain Griffiths from Trailer Happiness bar in London and Matthew Sykes, marketing director EMEA for Patrón Spirits International.

Matthew said: “This is an exciting opportunity for us to put our ultra-premium tequila in the hands of bartenders across the nation, engaging and including members of the trade. The Perfectionist competition allows those who respect and understand tequila as a rapidly growing category to experiment and learn about the versatile spirit – and win a trip to the Hacienda of course.”
