BBFB lines up packed programme for London Cocktail Week

Seminars, cocktail competitions and other activities are being organised by leading drinks company Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands (BBFB) for London Cocktail Week.

Its training team and brand ambassadors will join with master distillers and other industry experts to run sessions in Seven Dials in Covent Garden, one of the main hubs of the festival.

Aimed at both cocktail novices and experienced professionals, the sessions will run daily from Monday October 6 to Friday October 10 at the Seven Dials Club at 42 Earlham Street.

The seminars will showcase BBFB’s range of brands including Bacardi rum, Grey Goose vodka, Jack Daniel’s whiskey, Bombay Sapphire gin, and Woodford Reserve whiskey as well as examining the latest trends in the world of sprits and cocktails.

Seminars and other events include:

St Germain Les Femmes Du Bar Competition (Monday October 6, 1pm – 2pm): a competition for members of the St Germain Female Bartender’s Club, challenging them to create a delicious St Germain winter serve. They will be competing for a trip to Moscow and a guest shift in one of the city’s best bars, Delicatessen. People are welcome to come along to support.

A Topical Infusion of Nature, Alchemy and Design (Tuesday October 7, 12pm – 1pm): Designer, alchemist and avid seeker of scent, Lauren Davies of HEKA, collaborates with Bombay Sapphire to talk about the parallels between the gin brand and her own design work. She will speak about her project The Alchemist’s Dressing Table and her focus on heritage, craftspeople, innovation, and sustainability that is in keeping with the brand’s own ethos. The flavours from Bombay Sapphire’s botanicals will be explored through the medium of natural perfume. Through discovering the history and chemical properties of certain materials, this talk aims to inspire new ways of thinking about, using and experiencing botanicals.

The Perfumer – The Artist of Scent (Tuesday October 7, 2pm – 3pm): Join the Grey Goose team to explore all things scent and the effect scent has on our mood, our feelings and our thoughts. Grey Goose will be joined by one of the world’s leading perfumers and showcase some unique and special fragrances alongside Grey Goose cocktails.

Woodford Reserve tasting with master distiller Chris Morris (Wednesday October 8, 12pm – 1pm): Brown-Forman bourbon master distiller Chris Morris and UK whiskey brand ambassador Tom Vernon will go through the taste and flavour of small-batch bourbon Woodford Reserve. There are over 200 flavours found in Woodford Reserve and by using its exclusive “Flavour Wheel”, Chris will help you detect many flavours that you may otherwise overlook.

The Craft of Jack (Wednesday October 8, 2pm – 3pm): Jack Daniel’s brand ambassador Cam Dawson takes you through the expressions that the master distiller calls his “Craftsman’s Playground”. Jack Daniel’s Rye, Barrel Proof Single Barrel, Sinatra Select and Gold No 27 are just four of the unique offerings available to try.

Leblon – Meet the Maker (Wednesday October 8, 4pm – 5pm): Leblon Cachaça, the premium handcrafted natural cane cachaça, is bringing the spirit of Brazil to London along with its master distiller Carlos Eduardo. He will discuss the hand-crafted production process used to make Leblon and take guests on a virtual tour of the Destilaria Maison Leblon in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Does Age Matter? (Thursday October 9, 12pm – 1pm): A look at age and other factors that contribute to the flavour, taste and appearance of rum, hosted by UK Bacardi ambassador Metinee Kongsrivilai. This session promises to be interactive and will delve into the science behind ageing and the production process while conducting a tasting of different styles of rum.

“Staying Alive” with Iain Griffiths and Rob Libecans of White Lyan (Thursday October 9, 2pm – 3pm): La Levadura is the unique yeast strain used to create Bacardi rums since 1862 and one of the reasons why Bacardi has managed to stay alive. UK Bacardi ambassador Metinee Kongsrivilai, who also works at east London bar White Lyan, is joined by Iain Griffiths and Rob Libecans from White Lyan to take you on an interactive journey of yeast and fermentation. This hands-on session will explore the different stages of fermentation, looking at factors such as yeast strain, sugar content, temperature and the effects of each. Email to book a place.

The Untameable Spirit: how to create a cocktail enthusiast’s dream destination many miles from home (Thursday October 9, 4pm – 5pm): The team from Singapore’s 28 Hongkong Street, which was named best international bar at Tales of the Cocktail’s Spirited Awards in New Orleans, demonstrate how our cocktail borders are expanding. The look at how to set up an award-winning cocktail bar in a new market. If you don’t have the talent pool, industry culture, or even the basic products at your fingertips, how can you launch a great watering hole in a former cocktail desert? UK Bacardi ambassador Shervene Shahbazkhani will be joined by Zdenek Kastanek and Michael Callahan from 28 HongKong Street to explore how to nurture and develop a successful bar.

French Martini – Recreating a Modern Classic (Friday October 10, 12pm – 1pm): UK Chambord brand ambassador Frank McGivern and bartender Ally Martin of Peg + Patriot in east London will de-construct the French Martini – the poster child of the 1990s “Martini” craze and quite often the first drink mixed and drunk by many an aspiring bartender. They will experiment with various ingredients, techniques and garnishes to play with perceptions of flavour and create the French Martini 2.0.

Vermouth Then and Vermouth Now (Friday October 10, 3.30pm – 5pm): Martini global brand ambassador Giuseppe Gallo and bartender Jamie MacDonald will take you through a visual and stimulating production of vermouth through the past, the present and leading into the future. Through forgotten classic cocktails to the 80s and 90s, they will showcase the diversity of vermouth and highlight its future.
