Beer sommeliers recognised in expanded BII awards

Tim Hulme BIIThe BII, the licensed trade training body, is to introduce three new awards as part of its Licensee of the Year ceremony for 2014.

They include Beer Sommelier of the Year, sponsored by the Beer Academy, which rewards qualified Beer Academy sommeliers for developing beer’s profile in the licensed hospitality sector.

The other new categories are Fundraiser of the Year, which recognises pubs’ fund-raising activities and long-term commitment to charity, and Apprentice of the Year for people who are going through or completed a BII Apprenticeship.

The three categories join the Licensee of the Year Award, the Jeremy Allen Award, which recognises excellence in training and staff development, and the SAB Miller Scholars Programme to recognise staff who demonstrate a long-term, dedicated and responsible approach to selling alcohol.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on May 14 at London’s Grosvenor House.

BII chief executive Tim Hulme (pictured) said: “The industry is full of dedicated, knowledgeable and hard-working individuals, and this new set of awards are designed to recognise some of those.”
