Bénédictine backs UKBG National Cocktail Competition

Nathan Merriman and Simone Caporale win UKBG Young Bartender of the YearFrench liqueur brand Bénédictine is to be sponsor of this year’s UK Bartenders Guild National Cocktail Competition which is now in its 80th year.

It includes heats in Manchester, London, Brighton and Glasgow and a final in London where bartenders will compete for a trip to South Africa to represent the UK in the IBA World Final next year.

Competitors have to create a cocktail that includes at least 25ml of Bénédictine and will be judged on their drink as well as their knowledge of the liqueur and their profession.

Daniel Crebesse, UKBG president, said: “It’s brilliant to have Bénédictine liqueur on board this year. It’s a great brand and we think it will bring a different challenge to this year’s competition.

“The grand prize this year is fantastic so we’re expecting a very high standard of entrants, and are looking forward to presenting the winner with a trip to South Africa.”

Bénédictine brand manager Paul Curry said: “The UKBG National Cocktail Competition is a fantastic event to be involved in, attracting a high calibre of entrant who will exploit the versatility of our brand and therefore we’re delighted to be this year’s sponsor.

“Bénédictine’s distinctive flavour means that it is a great ingredient for cocktails, and we love to see professionals being creative with their recipes. We’re looking forward to seeing what exciting creations the mixologists have up their sleeves for us throughout the competition.”

The traditional French Liqueur created in 1510 and named after its creator, a Bénédictine monk, is made using 27 herbs and spices, sourced from around the world. This unique recipe is then infused with saffron, honey and caramel in a sophisticated production process that takes two years to complete.

Entrants must be members of the UKBG to enter, with membership available from £35. For more information on how to register, visit www.ukbartendersguild.co.uk.

Provisional dates and locations for the heats are Kelvingrove Café in Glasgow on June 3, Epernay in Manchester on June 10, Hotel du Vin in Brighton on June 17 and a London venue on June 24 with the final taking place at the Skylounge at the DoubleTree by Hilton Tower of London on July 10.

Last year, Bénédictine sponsored the UKBG Young Bartender of the Year competition, which was won by Nathan Merriman of the Savoy’s American Bar, with Simone Caporale of the Langham Hotel’s Artesian bar in second place (pictured).
