Dandelyan, the bar at the new Mondrian London on the South Bank, has been named the top drinking venue of 2014 in awards run by website Just Opened London.

JustOpenedLondon.com, which tells us that Dandelyan (pictured) opened 79 days ago, praises the cocktail bar headed by bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana as “cool, substantial and different”.

One of two runner-ups for top drinking venue is Peg + Patriot, the cocktail bar opened by bartender Matt Whiley at the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green.

The other runner-up is WC in Clapham Common – a wine and charcuterie bar created out of former public toilets by entrepreneurs Andy Bell and Jayke Mangion.

The other eight bars in Just Opened London’s top 10 are Bermondsey Arts Club, The Arch near Cambridge Heath, Bump Caves in Tower Bridge Road, Mission in Bethnal Green, Fifty-Two in Hackney, Basement Sate in Soho and the Sun Tavern in Bethnal Green.

The title of overall top opening of 2014 went to The Hoxton Holborn, a hotel with Brooklyn-inspired grill-style restaurant Hubbard & Bell, rotisserie chicken specialist Chicken Shop in the basement and coffee destination Holborn Grind.

Top place to eat in 2014 is Typing Room, the restaurant that opened this summer at the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green, headed by executive chef Lee Westcott and backed by chef Jason Atherton.

The runner-up for top place to eat is Hill & Szrok Master Butcher & Cookshop in Broadway Market in Hackney, which is a butcher’s by day and a restaurant by night.

Adam Bloodworth, editor of Just Opened London, said: “Our yearly awards showcase London’s most triumphant creative minds in food, drinks and culture. The awards hold a lens up to, as well as define, what we do: talk about and celebrate the finest of London’s contemporary scene.”

Just Opened London also gave an award for top culture destination to Secret Cinema’s immersive theatrical screening of the film Grant Budapest Hotel, the title of top play to Golem at the Young Vic, and the award for best exhibition to The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier at The Barbican.
