Bombay Sapphire winner creates Virgin cocktail

Bombay Sapphire Red Carpet A limited-edition cocktail created by last year’s winner of the Bombay Sapphire World’s Most Imaginative Bartender competition has been introduced in Virgin Atlantic’s Clubhouses.

The Red Carpet (pictured) was exclusively created by Matteo Vanzi and will be available for 12 months at the airline’s Clubhouses in Heathrow, Gatwick, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Washington DC, JFK and Newark in New York City, and Johannesburg.

The cocktail is an indulgent but refreshing combination of Bombay Sapphire gin, St Germain elderflower liqueur, crème de framboise raspberry liqueur and fresh lemon juice, shaken and served in a champagne flute and topped up with prosecco.

Creating a cocktail for the exclusive Clubhouses was part of Matteo’s prize for winning last year’s competition. He worked closely with the Virgin Atlantic team to develop the recipe.

He said: “My inspiration for the cocktail comes from those exciting emotions you feel when you are at the beginning of something beautiful like a holiday.

“I’m grateful to Bombay Sapphire as it was truly an honour to be given this opportunity and I can’t wait for the Clubhouse’s passengers worldwide to enjoy a taste of my imagination.”

Matteo, from Stravinskji Bar at Hotel de Russie in Rome, was crowned Bombay Sapphire World’s Most Imaginative Bartender at the global cocktail competition which took place in May last year in Tuscany, Italy – the home of the juniper berries at the heart of Bombay Sapphire gin.

He competed against 10 other professional bartenders from around the world including the UK champion, Joe Wild of Berry & Rye in Liverpool.

The UK final of this year’s Bombay Sapphire World’s Most Imaginative Bartender competition is due to be held in London later this month.

35ml Bombay Sapphire
10ml St Germain
5ml Crème de framboise
20ml Lemon juice

Shake all the ingredients together apart from the prosecco, and then strain into a flute glass. Top with prosecco.
