A German beer bar has been created in the basement of Edinburgh bar Frankenstein by leading operator Glendola Leisure. With waiting staff clad in traditional Bavarian dress and live music from oompah bands, the Bier Keller in George IV Bridge aims to be a party destination where dancing on tables is encouraged. It is open until 1am on weekdays and 3am at weekends, with DJs as well as oompah bands and other German music “with a modern twist”, described as “Beyoncé meets Bavaria”.
The 165 sq ft bar features VIP areas, booths and alcoves available for hire, with seating at traditional long wooden tables for up to 160. It offers three draught beers including Erdinger Weissbier and Radeberger, served in traditional stein glasses, and an extensive range of bottled beers such as Al Chouffe, Kwak, Duvel, Leffe and Vedett from Belgium and Krombacher, Furstenberg and Holsten Pils from Germany.
Cocktails include the Ginger German, mixing Jägermeister, amaretto and ginger beer, and the Schwarzwald, made with chocolate liqueur, cherry brandy and cranberry juice. The Apfel Strudel brings together Smirnoff Green Apple vodka, cinnamon schnapps, cherry brandy and apple juice. They are available in half-stein glasses for £6.50 or two-pint sharing steins for £19.50.
As well as Jägermeister, Josef Meier’s Herbal and Goldschläger, its “schnapps” list features Kleiner Feigling fig liqueur from Germany, Krupnik honey vodka liqueur from Poland and Wolfschmidt Kummel from Germany.
Food includes “Frankie’s Furters” – traditional sausages including bratwurst and bockwurst as well as a vegetarian option – served in a brioche roll with sauerkraut, pickle, fried onion and mustard. Desserts include apple strudel and Black Forest gateau.
Targeting groups such as stag and hen parties, party packages include free entry, reserved premium seating, table service, a two-pint sharing “Haus Stein” or half-pint stein cocktails. The £15 Cologne package includes bratwurst, the £20 Frankfurt package includes schnapps and jumbo bockwurst and the £25 Munich package includes a two-course Bavarian meal and schnapps.
The winter menu features roast turkey saddle with cranberry gravy, belly pork with red wine and honey reduction as well as dark chocolate and honeycomb mousse and mince pies. Packages for groups will range from a £10 buffet to a £26.95 three-course meal with a half bottle of wine.

Frankenstein’s Bier Keller builds on the success of The World Famous Frankenstein 1818 bar upstairs, which features a Gothic interior inspired by the 1818 Gothic novel about Dr Frankenstein and his monster. It was acquired by Glendola Leisure, part of Foundation Group, in 2011 from Saltire Taverns.
