Bristol bartender triumphs with gin and sake idea

Dee DaviesBartender Dee Davies (pictured) of Hyde & Co in Bristol has beaten bartenders from across Western Europe to win the final of Diageo’s Show Your Spirit by World Class competition to develop a new product.

After four days of intense liquid and brand development, she impressed the judges with her idea for a distilled gin with a heart of sake, called Jinzu.

Dee is now entitled to five per cent of the net sales for the first five years of the product launch. An additional five per cent of the net sales will be put into bartender initiatives fund to create a legacy.

She will have the opportunity to see her co-created liquid feature alongside Diageo brands such as Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky and Ketel One Vodka.

After hundreds of bartenders entered from all over Western Europe, Dee was one of four people who secured a place at Boot Camp and the final. The other finalists were Naomi Mason of Mixology Group in Brighton, Fjalar Goud from the Netherlands and Dennis Zoppi from Italy.

They worked alongside Diageo’s liquid development experts and packaging design specialists at the company’s Global Innovation Centre before presenting it to the judging panel at the final. Judges included leading bartender Salvatore Calabrese, Diageo’s global innovation director Syl Saller and Noel de Munck, director of food and beverage for Hilton UK & Ireland.

Syl said: “As an industry-first initiative, Show Your Spirit has exceeded all our expectations in terms of the passion, innovation and entrepreneurial flair. Dee is the embodiment of all these things. Her natural charisma, enthusiasm and clarity of vision are what steered her idea to greatness.”

Dee added: “This really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’m extremely proud my idea was selected as the winning product. My fellow competitors were tough competition and all had outstanding ideas.

“It was a tense week, but the learning and experience working alongside the Diageo experts has been invaluable. To be part of a first for the drinks industry has to be the highlight of my career so far and I’m very excited for the future of our spirit.”

Jinzu will be officially unveiled and sampled at the World Class bartender competition global final in July.
