Chairman’s Reserve offers prize of trip to St Lucia


Lyndon HigginsonBartenders can win the prize of a trip to the Caribbean island of St Lucia through a cocktail competition run by Chairman’s Reserve at the Northern Restaurant & Bar show.

They are asked to come up with an original cocktail using the St Lucian rum by a deadline of February 28 for a chance to compete at the event in Manchester on March 19.

It is organised by Dave Marsland, also known as Drinks Enthusiast, who is working alongside Emporia Brands, distributor for St Lucia Distillers’ rum in the UK. It links to Emporia Brands’ Chairman’s XI programme to engage with bartenders.

The recipe must contain at least 25ml of Chairman’s Reserve rum but can otherwise be as creative as the entrant wants. They will have up to five minutes on stage to re-create the cocktail for the judging panel.

The winner will visit St Lucia as the guest of St Lucia Distillers, including rum training at the distillery and a chance to share expertise with the island’s bartenders plus a chance to explore the Caribbean island.

A member of the judging panel this year will be bartender Lyndon Higginson (pictured) of The Liars Club in Manchester, who enjoyed the last trip over to St Lucia.

He said: “The last time I judged a Chairman’s Reserve Cocktail Competition, the weather was a bit warmer than Manchester in March, and the entrants were so enthusiastic following training sessions with us.

“I am already envious of the winner, who will enjoy the Chairman’s XI experience in St Lucia later this year, visiting a world-class distillery and meeting some great people.”

Entrants should email Dave Marsland at drinks_enthusiast@yahoo.co.uk with their recipe by midnight on February 28.

Judges will pick their five favourites and their creators will be contacted on March 5 and invited to demonstrate their drinks on the Drinks Live stage at the Northern Restaurant and Bar show at Manchester Central.

Chairman’s Reserve rum and basic bar equipment will be supplied at the final, with all other ingredients, garnishes and glassware to be provided by the competitor.

Judges will be scoring for knowledge on the Chairman’s Reserve brand, the appearance and presentation of the drink, the aromas of the cocktail and how it tastes.

Chairman’s Reserve Finest St Lucia Rum is a blend of pot and coffey still rums. It is aged for up to five years in ex-bourbon casks and then returned to cask after blending for a further six months.

St Lucia Distillers beat off the challenge from the world’s finest malt whisky and cognac distilleries to take the trophy for Individual Distiller of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge 2013.
