A menu of “mood-boosting” cocktails has been launched at London bar Barts, using ingredients that are proven to ensure both body and mind function at their best.
Bar manager Vincenzo Sibilia has created three recipes that are rich with serotonin that helps regulate neurotransmitters and hormone activity in the body, keeping energy levels up and the mood and mind happy.
Relax (pictured top) is a “tranquilising” cocktail with stress-busting ingredients including Barts’ camomile elixir, lavender extract, lemon juice, cardamom and saffron-infused Tanqueray gin. Rich in calcium and magnesium, camomile helps alleviate stress and calm nerves, while lavender helps eliminate anxiety, relax the body and promote a peaceful night’s sleep. Lemon has many nourishing elements from vitamin C to protein and is said to keep nerves at bay and the mind cool and collected.
Happiness (pictured above) is a cocktail with vibrant fresh fruit that is rich in nutrients necessary for serotonin to develop and reach optimal levels in the brain. Studies have shown that an increase in daily fruit and vegetable intake is positively correlated with happiness levels.
Made with strawberries, lemon, cherry tomatoes, maraschino cherries, sugar, basil leaves, pepper and Belvedere Vodka, Happiness is said to increase serotonin levels and the endorphins that promise to have guests feeling elated and centred.
Focus (pictured below) is a stimulating cocktail made with smoked wheat coffee beans, British aperitif Kamm & Sons, hazelnut syrup and Bob’s Bitters. Coffee is packed with caffeine that boosts serotonin levels and positively impacts the mood. Caffeine also suppresses a neurotransmitter in the brain called adenosine which influences attention, alertness and sleep. When caffeine blocks adenosine, it keeps the body awake and alert and has been proven to boost mental performance throughout the day.
The cocktails are available at the bar in Sloane Avenue, Chelsea, for a limited period.
