Classic cocktail inspires new gin developed with leading bartender

A classic cocktail has inspired a third expression of Copperhead Gin, created in collaboration with world-leading bartender Marian Beke, owner of The Gibson bar in London.

Available from later this month, Copperhead Gin The Gibson Edition is a savoury style of gin, designed to complement the classic Gibson cocktail and its pickled onion garnish.

It uses five original Copperhead classic botanicals of juniper, coriander seed, cardamom, angelica, and orange peel plus distillations of 14 spices traditionally used in pickling including mace, pepper, cassia, bay leaf, ginger, allspice, fennel and dill seeds.

Produced in Belgium, it is finished with a touch of eight-year-old genever to complete the smooth and complex taste.

Marian (pictured below), who took the classic cocktail as inspiration for his bar The Gibson in Old Street, worked with the Belgian distillery to develop the recipe.

He said: “I wanted something a little bit spicy, savoury and dry but I couldn’t find anything on the market that was big on savoury, umami flavour.”

Perfect for Martinis including the Gibson, The Gibson Edition can be used for a pickled twist to cocktails and also combined with tonic water for a twist on a G&T with a pickle as garnish.

The Gibson Edition follows the launch of the first Copperhead Gin in its home market of Belgium in 2014, entering the UK in 2015, with the Black Batch variant, with added botanicals such as elderberry and black Ceylon tea, coming a year later.

Distributed by 10 Degrees C in the UK, Copperhead is now stocked in top-end bars and restaurants such as The Connaught, The Dorchester, the Nightjar, Oriole, Le Caprice and The Gibson.
