Coca-Cola creates Signature Mixers to pair with dark spirits

Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) has collaborated with world-renowned mixologists to create a range of innovative Coca-Cola mixers to pair with premium dark spirits.

The launch marks Coca-Cola’s first ever liquid collaboration, and builds on the brand’s craftsmanship, heritage and longstanding reputation as the original, authentic mixer enjoyed across the world.

In March 2018, Coca-Cola invited Max Venning of Bar Three and Three Sheets, London; Adrianna Chía of Antigua Compañia de Las Indias, Barcelona; Pippa Guy of The American Bar at The Savoy; Antonio Naranjo of Dr Stravinksy in Barcelona; and Alex Lawrence, former head bartender at Dandelyan, to attend a curated workshop held at a secret location in London.

The group set to work experimenting with numerous ingredients to create “complex flavour compositions” to enhance the original taste of Coca-Cola.

With the help of the bartenders, four specially crafted flavours have been developed: Smoky, Spicy, Herbal and Woody.

Coca-Cola Signature Mixers Smoky Notes has been co-created by Max. The “intensely aromatic” blend, which features subtle hints of oak, Ylang Ylang, ambrette seed, dried fruit and warm brown spices, brings a “nuanced dimension” to deep, spiced rums and bold, premium whiskies.

The Spicy mixer, developed in collaboration with Adriana and Pippa, is “complex” and “fiery”. Lime, ginger, jalapeño, rosemary and jasmine combine to create a mixer to pair with spiced rums, aged or golden tequilas and spicy or sweet whiskies.

Coca-Cola partnered with Antonio to create Herbal Notes. Blended with dill leaves, citrus and lemongrass for a “refreshing taste”, it has been designed to mix with amber whiskies and most types of rum. Coca-Cola also recommends pairing Herbal with a premium vodka.

Completing the range is Coca-Cola Signature Mixers Woody Notes by Alex. Crafted to enhance golden rums and smoky to woody whiskies, the liquid features a subtle blend of earthy patchouli, citrusy yuzu and aromatic basil.

Simon Harrison, vice president, commercial development at Coca-Cola European Partners GB, said: “Coca-Cola has always been part of cocktail culture and history, from the Cuba Libre of the 1900s to some of the world’s best cocktails today.

“Coca-Cola Signature Mixers marks an exciting new frontier for the Coca-Cola Trademark and a reflection of our ongoing commitment as a Total Beverage Company.

“By collaborating with experts, we believe that we have developed a totally innovative and unique product range for mixology that only Coca-Cola can do.

“There is no other brand or recipe that is more mysterious and iconic than Coca-Cola and we’re excited to be able to introduce this new and innovative product to the on-trade.

“We have started to see strong growth in dark spirits like whisky and rum, and a brand like Coca-Cola innovating in this segment with complex flavours and distinct pack design – in keeping with our heritage – will bring more interest and curiosity to an exciting sector.”

Inspired by the brand’s heritage, Coca-Cola Signature Mixers are served in a contemporary 200ml Hutchinson glass bottle, a silhouette first used by Coca-Cola in 1894. Each batch is stamped with the signature of its co-creator.

The Coca-Cola Signature Mixers range will be available to the on-trade from June 2019.

The launch will be backed by a marketing campaign that will kick off with a takeover of the iconic Piccadilly sign. There will also be trade and consumer experiential activity and collaborations with mixologists and spirit brands.

Training will be available to the licensed trade as well as back bar displays that hero the range and Hutchinson bottle, bespoke glassware and menus.
