Cointreau, the iconic French orange liqueur and a staple ingredient in the original Margarita, announces the launch of its co-branded editions of ecoSPIRITS’ ecoTOTEs™ and SmartPour™ electronic dispense systems in The Alchemist bars.

ecoSPIRITS is a circular economy company that has developed the world’s first low carbon, low waste packaging system for spirits and wine, supplying more than 2,000 leading bars, restaurants, hotels, and retailers with its groundbreaking closed loop packaging systems. In 2023 Rémy Cointreau, which owns Cointreau, announced its Sustainable Exception roadmap to reduce glass bottle usage; the partnership marks a significant step in achieving its ambitious goals for the drinks brand. It is a first for The Alchemist and the collaboration will see ecoSPIRITS’ ecoTOTEs and SmartPours rolled out across The Alchemist’s key London sites over the next few months, including St Martins Lane, Old Street, Aldgate, Canary Wharf, Battersea and Victoria, and will see the offering available in all 23 nationwide locations by December 2024.

The Alchemist will have access to a range of different pouring solutions, which will be used across the company’s sites. The reusable and sustainable ecoTOTEs will significantly reduce single-use packaging waste, allowing the bars to minimise environmental footprints and eliminate an estimated 3,532kg of packaging waste over the next 12 months along with an 76.7% reduction in CO2 footprint, as well as more than 820 trees planted. As part of the ecoSPIRITS Forest Program, one tree is planted for each cycle of an ecoTOTE through the ecoSPIRITS closed loop network.

Augustin Depardon, Managing Director of Rémy Cointreau UK & Ireland, noted: “Cointreau is an essential brand and a staple cocktail ingredient for our on-trade partners in the UK. This is a significant step in helping them reduce overall waste and promote the commitment to sustainability and eco-conscious practices. Equally, it’s vital for us at Rémy Cointreau to look at every pillar of our sustainable practices to see where we can do better, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Abi Hehir, Account Manager, Climate Partners, ecoSPIRITS, said: “We are delighted Rémy Cointreau is taking this bold step to reduce single use glass waste for its iconic liqueur brand Cointreau. The Alchemist – with its many venues, focus on mixology, and commitment to sustainability – is the perfect on-trade platform for the next phase of Cointreau’s UK rollout in ecoTOTE format. Let’s hope 2024 is the year of the low waste Margarita!”

The Alchemist, leading in molecular mixology, has become a popular consumer destination, providing guests with an immersive and theatrical experience. The introduction of ecoTOTEs and SmartPours is revolutionary for the brand’s bartenders, delivering convenience and efficiency while positively impacting time management and reducing costs. Rémy Cointreau has been working with The Alchemist since they opened their first site in 2010, electing to use Cointreau in several cocktail offerings: Margarita, Popsicle and Mad Hatter. They have won numerous awards, including ‘Best Drinks Offer’ at The Publican Awards in 2023, and are once again nominated for this prestigious award this year. The Alchemist has built an impressive reputation for its theatrical drink offering. Rémy Cointreau is very excited to work together on this new project and continue building our strong business relationship.

Speaking on the newly-launched partnership, Jenny McPhee, Brand Director at The Alchemist, said: We are delighted to be strengthening our partnership with ecoSPIRITS by adding an additional line of ecoTOTES to our venues. Cointreau features in several of our most popular cocktails, with the ecoTOTE introduction, we will see a significant reduction in single-use bottles and our overall carbon footprint. As a brand, we are constantly searching for ways to improve sustainable practices within the business, and it’s important that we work with suppliers who align with our goals. Ultimately, we would hope to see additional spirit brands using ecoTOTES over the next few years.”
