Cointreau announces By Invitation Only competition winners

Cointreau's By Invitation Only winners and judges

Bartenders Nathan Larkin and Marcos Ameneiros Zannone have been crowned the winners of Cointreau’s By Invitation Only Margarita Cocktail Competition.

Building off of the success of Cointreau’s 2018 ‘Margarita Loves Cointreau’ campaign, the competition champions creativity by encouraging mixologists from across the UK to come up with their own twist on the Margarita.

The final, which took place at Century Club rooftop in London, was judged by Alfred Cointreau, sixth generation scion of the Cointreau family, Sandrae Lawrence from The Cocktail Lovers, Sunday Brunch’s drinks expert Carl Anthony Brown and Henry Jeffreys from Master of Malt.

As part of their win, Nathan, who works at Manchester’s Speak in Code, and Marcos from Berners Tavern in London, will take a trip to Cannes Film Festival with Cointreau.

Sicolo Mayahuel and Susanita

Nathan’s Margarita, Sicolo Mayahuel, was dedicated to Mayahuel, an aztec goddess associated with the maguey plant.

Nathan said: “I kept my Margarita fairly simple, taking inspiration from Cointreau’s ‘Be Cointreauversial’ campaign, and the fact that Cointreau were one of the first brands to advertise females in a position of power.

The cocktail combined a smoked chipotle pepper infused blanco tequila, Cointreau and an aromatic ‘lime’ cordial made with makrut lime leaf, orange blossom, oolong tea, kewra water and malic acid, stirred down and served over block ice.

Marcos’ creation, Susanita, took inspiration from the accidental creation of the Crepe Suzette, as an after-dinner style Margarita twist, built with fresh orange flavours and textures.

Marcos said: “This was my first external competition, and as I was only promoted to bartender in November of last year. Nobody – not even me – was expecting such a great result for my winning Margarita!
