Bartenders are being challenged to create innovative new glassware in a design competition run by leading supplier Libbey.

With a prize including a trip to the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans, the European-wide Glassology design competition is seeking a vessel that will enhance a drink.

The competition calls on bar professionals to disregard existing styles and preconceptions about glassware and to come up with their own designs which will be judged on creativity, innovation and originality.

The winner will see their design put into production by Libbey and distributed around the globe, including 250 pieces for themselves. They will also become the Glassology ambassador at Tales of the Cocktail in July 2018.

Last year’s winner was Amsterdam-based bartender Robert Schinkel who impressed the judges with his creation, the Tulip Punch Bowl (pictured).

Bar professionals need to register for the competition at and submit their design by November 30. Judging will take place in December, leading to 25 semi-finalists being picked to explore their entry with design and marketing experts from Libbey in the Netherlands and Portugal.

The judges will then assess the semi-finalists’ full proposals, leading to six finalists been chosen to showcase their ideas at the Perfect Serve Barshow in Amsterdam in May 2018 where the winner will be announced.
