A competition has been launched for chefs and bartenders, including a challenge for them to create a cocktail with Copperhead gin alongside a complementary canapé.

The 2016 Mr Copperhead’s Cocktails & Canapés Competition offers three top prizes of a trip to the Copperhead Distillery in Belgium plus, for the overall winner, dinner for four at The Hinds Head By Heston Blumenthal in Bray, Berkshire, including an overnight stay at The Bray Cottages.

Open to bartenders around the UK, entrants will be selected for a series of regional heats. The deadline for entries is midnight at the close of Monday September 5. To enter, visit www.copperheadcc16.com.

There are two tasks for entry. Submit one palate cleanser using the classic Copperhead Gin and one of the Copperhead blends – concentrated flavours called Energeticum, Aperitivum and Digestivum.

The second task is to create a cocktail using either the Copperhead classic or the newly released Black Batch – made with added botanicals including Sambucus Nigra shrub and black Ceylon tea – presented with an accompanying cold canapé. Extra points are available for creative use of the Copperhead blends.

The judges will include bartender and gin specialist Leon Dalloway, founder of the Gin Journey consumer tastings, Copperhead UK ambassador David Coveney (aka Mr Copperhead), and Emma Cooke, lifestyle writer at Buzzfeed UK.

As well as taste, understanding of flavour and creativity in ingredients and use of the blends, the judges will be looking for brand knowledge, category history and visual presentation.

David Hamilton Boyd, winner of the 2015 Copperhead Gin Cocktail Competition, said: “This is one competition not to miss – a real bartender’s competition!”
