Sheffield bar owners build up extensive rum selection

A bar in Sheffield is building up its rum collection, including rare sought-after expressions, to secure its place as the most extensive selection in the UK outside of London.

Additions to the menu at Cubana include Havana Club Maximo Extra Añejo – an ultra-premium rum considered by some connoisseurs to be one of the best ever made.

The bar’s owners Adrian Bagnoli and Brad Charlesworth sourced the rum – which they offer for £150 per 25ml shot – during a week in Cuba sampling rums, visiting bars, restaurants and clubs and checking out musicians.

The new menu has already grown to 161 varieties of rum which they believe to be the most extensive in the UK outside of London.

It features rums from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Martinique, Barbados and other exotic locations as well as Japan with a rum called Nine Leaves.

There is also O’Hara’s Spiced Rum available at £3.20 a shot – a blend of rums from Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago that is shipped to Sheffield to have its unique mix of spices added.

Adrian said: “We’ve been working on our rum menu for quite a few months and securing a bottle of Maximo Extra Añejo was the last piece of the jigsaw. It’s handcrafted by blending the finest and oldest rum reserves. Only 1,000 bottles of this prized reserve are available worldwide and we have one of them.

“We’re hoping to further our links with Cuba in the coming months and are now in advanced discussions with a view to bringing a very talented group of Cuban musicians over from Havana for a two-month residency with us – which if we succeed will be an amazing coup for Cubana.”

Other achievements for the bar in Leopold Square over the past 15 years include securing visits from internationally acclaimed Cuban band the Buena Vista Social Club, Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, once considered to be the best pound for pound fighter of all time, and, last year, a visit from Dr Aleida Guevara, daughter of Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara.
