Diplomático targets bars with competition

Bartenders are being offered a chance to represent the UK at the finals of the first international cocktail competition for Diplomático rum in Venezuela.

Distributor Speciality Brands is organising regional heats and a final in the UK, challenging them to create a cocktail using the rum.

The UK winner will go on a seven-day trip to Venezuela – the home of Diplomático – to compete in the world final where the prize is $5,000 (£3,100).

Destilerias Unidas in Venezuela has been producing top-quality spirits for over 45 years. The Diplomático range includes the Blanco, Añejo, Reserva, Reserva Exclusiva and Ambassador.

The competition will be judged over four rounds. Round one will be the electronic submission of original drink recipes, with the deadline of February 22, via www.diplomaticorum.com/tournament or by email to declan@specialitybrands.com, with a picture of the drink, name, recipe, place of work and location, email address and mobile phone number.

All cocktails must contain at least 30ml of one of the Diplomático range and no more than six ingredients it total and can be either an original creation or improvement upon an established recipe.

There will be five regional heats in March at Bramble in Edinburgh, the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy in London, Bibi’s in Leeds, UnderDog in Shoreditch in London, and The Milk Thistle in Bristol.

The top two bartenders from each heat will be put forward to the UK final on April 8. The winner will represent the UK at the global final of the Diplomático World Cocktail Competition as part of an all-expenses-paid trip to Venezuela from May 3 to 8, taking in Venezuela’s sites, beaches and cuisine.
