Staff and management at Montpeliers are celebrating after their business was named the best multiple operator in Scotland.

The company was one of the winners in last month’s BII Scotland annual awards for the licensed hospitality industry, held at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow.

Based in Edinburgh, Montpeliers is one of the longest-established operators of bars and restaurants in the city, with venues such as Indigo Lounge, Opal Lounge, Rick’s, Candy, Montpeliers, Lulu and Tigerlily (pictured).

The title of bar personality of the year went to bartender David Craig from Gin71, the gin bar in Glasgow that has now expanded to sites in Glasgow’s Merchant City and Edinburgh.

The award for best spirits bar went to The Square Bar & Kitchen in Crieff in Perth and Kinross which has an extensive collection of gins and a dedicated gin space called The Speak Easy.

Harry’s Bar in Edinburgh was named best new initiative because it is run as a community interest company (CIC), supporting social enterprise projects to employ and train young people from hard-to-reach backgrounds.

Best new operator was Glendola Leisure’s brewpub Shilling Brewing Co which opened in Glasgow last year.

The title of best cask and craft beer bar when to Six Degrees North in Glasgow – part of a group that also has bars in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire.

The Edinburgh site of Bombay café-style restaurant group Dishoom gained the title of best operator for training while Kained Holdings’ Porter & Rye in Glasgow was name best food operator after previously winning in 2015. The Kelbourne Saint in Glasgow was named best venue for families.

Jo Graham, chair of BII Scotland, said: “We all know what a fabulous industry this is to work in, which can give a rewarding career that can take you all over the world. We celebrated some of the best people and recognised the passion and innovation throughout Scotland.”
