Estonian bartender wins Monin World Cup

A creamy gin-based cocktail with flavours of strawberry, peach and amaretto helped bartender Maia Iljina from Estonia win this year’s final of the International Monin Cup.

She was one of 27 bartenders from Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific who competed at the event at the Montparnasse Tower in Paris this month. They included the winner of the UK Monin Cup, William Humphery (pictured) from Hausbar in Bristol, who came 10th out of 27.

The finalists had to prepare a Monin-flavoured alcoholic short drink and then the final six were challenged to create a Monin-flavoured non-alcoholic long drink using ingredients from a mystery box.

Maia, who is a bartender at the Olympic Casino in Tallinn, impressed judges with her cocktail, La Vie en Rose, which featured Le Fruit de Monin Strawberry, Monin Peach Syrup, Monin Amaretto syrup, dry gin and cream. Her non-alcoholic Oasis included Le Fruit de Monin Strawberry, Le Fruit de Monin Passion Fruit, Perrier and basil leaves.

Her prize is a trip to London during London Cocktail Week in October next year.

Second place went to Miyuki Hongo of Japan, while Tadas Dvarvytis from Lithuania was third.

The Monin Cup Final event also featured talks and demonstrations from leading cocktail experts, such as Joseph Trotta on cocktail garnishes by Joseph Trotta, Perrier on mixology tips and Eric Bouton on syrup tasting plus a flair show from award-winning flair bartenders Marek Posluszny and Tomek Malek.

James Coston, Monin UK brand ambassador, said: “It was an amazing competition, with plenty of innovation, flair and creativity on display. Monin syrups allow mixologists to use their skills to the full, and the final showed just how imaginative and clever competitors could be. There were some truly delicious and fantastic-looking drinks produced.”
