Family firms join forces to put a crafty twist on a classic drink

Herefordshire cousins twist a classic drink

Herefordshire cousins Susan Vaughan of Celtic Marches and Kate Turner of Penrhos Spirits have joined forces to create G&C, a smooth ‘gin cider’.

Keeping it local, the cousins have teamed their multi award-winning craft drinks to create the new refreshing beverage. By blending quality Herefordshire craft cider with Penrhos’ copper distilled premium dry gin, they have produced a surprisingly smooth cocktail, which bursts with botanicals and captivates the essence of the orchards.

G&C offers subtle notes of cherry blossom, which linger after the delicate sweet honey mouthfeel. The pure gin after notes are perfectly executed, with pink pepper, cardamom and rose petals gently lifting through the cider.

Susan and her brother Robert Hancocks of Wyer Croft, Bishops Frome, have been working closely with Kate and her partners at Penrhos to bring this limited edition still cider to fruition.

Both independent businesses are growing in the Herefordshire Marches, physically and commercially, employing locally and reaping the benefits of working in such a rich and fertile county.

Kington, just over 20 miles from Celtic Marches, is home to the Penrhos Farm. It is formed of two farming families. Charles Turner and Richard Williams are lifelong friends, both fruit farmers in the Herefordshire Marches. With a passion for their fruits and a love of their farmscapes, it was important for them to incorporate homegrown fruits into the copper distilled gins.

Their craft gin is created in small batches using a 150L copper still, housed in a 250-year-old repurposed cow shed. Their farms diversification is important and both families hope it will be embraced by future generations.

Using natural ingredients, Celtic Marches and Penrhos have a clear focus — producing the finest craft drinks using local resources.

Celtic Marches is home to 200 acres of cider apple orchards. With PGI status, it is guaranteed that the cider is made using 100% Herefordshire apples.

Both ambassadors for Herefordshire fruit farming, the cousins decided to produce a collaborative cider, captivating the rich fruits of the Marches. The smooth combination of these award-winning craft drinks offers a refreshingly different option.
