Bartenders were challenged to devise an original cocktail recipe using the rum for a chance to compete in the final for the prize of a trip to the Caribbean island of St Lucia where the spirit is produced.
Rum experts have chosen six finalists: Emma Andrew from 99 Hanover Street Bar in Edinburgh, Amir Javaid of Epernay in Manchester, Adrian Calderbank of The Church Green in Lymm in Cheshire, Adam Binnersley of Corridor in Salford, Manchester, Adam Day of The Violet Hour in West Didsbury, Manchester, and Tom Higham of Kosmonaut in Manchester.
The final will take place at Northern Restaurant & Bar at Manchester Central at 3.15pm on March 19, with a team of judges including Mark Ludmon, editor of Bar magazine, Lyndon Higginson of The Liars Club in Manchester and Scott Wallace of Emporia Brands, the distributor of Chairman’s Reserve.
The finalists’ recipes were selected by bloggers Peter Holland of The Floating Rum Shack, and Steven James of Rum Diaries. Due to the high calibre of entries, six finalists were chosen instead of the originally planned five.
Commenting on how he selected the finalists, Steven said: “I like ‘rum forward’ drinks that play to the strengths of the base spirit – and whether I myself would order the drink in a bar. I know Chairman’s Gold as a rum and think that the flavours and presentation of the chosen entries will highlight the rum.”
Each judge will be looking for knowledge of the Chairman’s Reserve brand, the appearance and presentation of the drink, the aromas of the cocktail and how it tastes.
The winner will visit St Lucia as the guest of St Lucia Distillers, including rum training at the distillery and a chance to share expertise with the island’s bartenders plus a chance to explore the Caribbean island.
The competition is organised by Dave Marsland, aka Drinks Enthusiast, and Emporia Brands.
