Dimi Savvaidis of the King of Islington in Dundee has been crowned the first ever UK champion of the biennial Global Monin Cup competition.
Now in its 7th year, the Monin Cup is open to professional bartenders under the age of 28. 2018’s participants were challenged to ‘Mix Their Origins’ to demonstrate creative genius behind the bar, using Monin products to design a signature cocktail.
Having won his regional heat, Dimi went on to win the UK Monin Cup in September, earning him a place in the high-stake global final in France.
45 Monin Cup finalists took part in three rounds which included testing their knowledge and understanding of the industry, their ability to identify ingredients and measurements by taste as well understanding the importance of no and low-ABV serves. In each round Dimi impressed judges with his knowledge, passion and creativity.
In the final round, the bartenders had to create a signature serve using the iconic Monin Original, where Dimi’s recipe Three Nights in Paris ultimately secured his win and €5,000 prize.
Dimi said: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed to be named Global Monin Cup winner 2018. It took a while for the news that I was the UK winner to sink in, but to be named global winner having competed against 45 of the best bartenders from around the globe is a really proud day for me.
“I’m excited for my next challenge and to continue working with the Monin range to create amazing cocktails.”
