First winner in Patrón search for ‘perfectionist’ bartenders

A bartender from Penarth in Wales has won the first regional heat in a competition run by Patrón tequila to find the most “perfectionist” bartenders.

Steve Young (pictured) from Pier 64 bar and restaurant in Penarth Marina, south-west of Cardiff, was announced as winner of the regional heat for the south and Wales.

He impressed judges with his Damas de Embalaje cocktail (pictured below), which combines Patrón Añejo tequila with roasted pineapple and cinnamon juice, fresh lime juice and raisin and banana shrub over a large smoked water ice cube.

He will compete in the UK final on November 16 at The Lucky Pig in London alongside four other finalists from the northern, Scottish, Northern Irish, and east and west London heats.

The Patrón Perfectionist’s Cocktail Competition is seeking out bartenders who put the same passion and care into crafting their cocktails as Patrón does into creating its tequilas.

The next regional heat is on Tuesday (August 23) at Mr Cooper’s House & Garden in Manchester, followed by heats in Edinburgh on September 6 and London on September 12 and 13.

The winner will receive a luxury trip to the Hacienda Patrón – Patrón Tequila’s stunning distillery in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The winning cocktail will also feature as a limited-edition special serve at the winner’s bar.

After the success of the inaugural Patrón Perfectionist’s Cocktail Competition in the UK last year, it has been expanded to an international level for 2016 with bartenders in Mexico, Australia, UAE, France, Spain and Italy. All the national winners will meet at the Hacienda in January where they will compete in the grand final.
