Funkin has launched a new search for an “Innovation Champion” among the UK’s bartending community.

The cocktail ingredients specialist is calling for entries to the competition with the top prize of a role within the team, worth upwards of £6,000.

The winner will have the chance to work hands-on with Funkin on a part-time, freelance basis. Together with a £500 cash prize, they will work on exciting projects including product development.

Entrants will need to demonstrate their passion for and understanding of cocktails by proposing an inventive on-trade concept and also create an original Funkin cocktail – one that is full of flavour and easily replicated.

Those with the most innovative ideas and sellable serves will be invited to compete for the title at the final which will be held during London Cocktail Week in October. The winner will then see their cocktail served at the Funkin stand during the festival.

They will follow in the footsteps of last year’s Innovation Champion, Shea Campbell (pictured), who not only created a winning cocktail but also impressed judges with his innovation idea of cucumber ice. Previous winners include Massimo Zitti and Dan Redman-Hubley.

Shea said: “The Funkin Innovation Champion competition allows you to think outside the box and challenges you to come up with an ingredient that will change the bartending industry. I’ve had an incredible experience as the winner, travelling and networking alongside Funkin’s development team.”

Funkin managing director Andrew King added: “We take pride in working closely with the bartending industry, and Innovation Champion is a perfect example of one of the ways we do that. Innovation is at the heart of what we do, so the winner will need to be insightful and creative, presenting a product that truly fills a gap in the cocktail world.

“In true Funkin fashion we move quickly to get products to market, so this year the winner will also have his or her cockatil served at the Funkin stand during London Cocktail Week following the competition. This is a great opportunity for the winner to receive immediate exposure and involve consumers in the competition. We look forward to another exciting final and year ahead.”
