Tavla, a new Turkish-inspired backgammon bar, has opened inside east London’s Hart Shoreditch Hotel.
Meaning backgammon in Turkish, Tavla has “socialising at its core”, offering guests the chance to play the boardgame whilst enjoying cocktails, bar snacks and a soundtrack of vinyl DJs.
Located on the ground floor of the 126-room hotel, which presents Hilton’s fourth Curio property, the modern bar space has been designed by London-based designers Fabled Studio, and features soft textures, furnishings and warm lighting.
A selection of playful house classics and barrel-aged cocktails are available, alongside wine, Turkish coffees and alcohol-free long drinks.
Antep Chai, for example, offers a delicate mix of Cîroc vodka, green matcha, pistachio syrup, lime, kefir milk and Green Chartreuse, while the barrel-aged Tavla Old Fashioned is made with Bulleit Bourbon and Rye whiskeys, maple syrup, whiskey barrel-aged bitters and orange oils.
Tavla serves a menu of traditional bar snacks that have been reimagined with a Levantine twist by Fez Ozalgan, head chef at Barboun, Hart Shoreditch Hotel’s in-house restaurant.
Dishes include a merguez scotch egg with zhoug yoghurt and rose harrisa cashews, almonds and peanuts and hummus with crispy onion and pitta.
Also on offer are a range of flatbreads, such as Choke Hold, with artichokes, spinach, black olives and burnt leek to The Codfather, with whipped cod roe, black olives and burnt leek.
