Havana Club to release smoky rum in UK

A limited-edition rum finished in smoky whisky casks has been unveiled by Havana Club as part of its Tributo collection.

Only 2,500 bottles have been released of Havana Club Tributo 2018, a new blend created from rums kept in 60-year-old casks and part-finished in barrels that previously held smoky malt whiskies, giving it a subtle but distinctive smoky note.

The rum is the third instalment in the Tributo collection, a series of annual releases that pay tribute to the different elements of the authentic Cuban rum production process.

Each bottle of Tributo 2018 is numbered and personalised with the signature of rum master Asbel Morales, “maestro del ron Cubano”, to provide a guarantee of quality.

It is bottled at 40% ABV and is available in 21 markets, five more than the last edition, including the UK. It has a recommended price of around £350 per 70cl bottle, presented in a luxurious box crafted in white wood to reflect the oak used in the barrels.

Tasting notes from Havana Club
Colour: Deep, burnished copper
Nose: Oloroso sherry, toffee and cinnamon. Old leather and balsamic notes with hints of smoke and iodine together with stewed apricot, dark raisins, bitter orange and a little bit of pipe tobacco.
Palate: Soft, rich and full initially, evolving through to fruit cake, dark chocolate and winter spice in the mid-palate and a dry, structured and exceptionally long finish. The flavour is overlaid with slightly bitter notes of smoke, seaweed and iodine to give the rum of truly exceptional character and complexity
