Hotelympia reveals finalists for design award


Berners Tavern The London EditionThree London hotel bars feature in the finalists’ list for the 2014 Design Award run alongside trade show Hotelympia.

The three finalists for the award, which recognises outstanding modern design excellence, are The London Edition in Fitzrovia, ME by Meliã in Covent Garden and the Great Northern Hotel at King’s Cross.

They will be featured in a dedicated display in the Design Gallery, alongside the Design Stage, at Hotelympia which is at London Excel from April 28 to May 1. The winner will be announced on the Design Stage on the afternoon of April 28.

The London Edition, which was designed by Yabu Pushelberg and Ian Schrager, is home to a lobby bar, the Punch Room bar and restaurant and bar Berners Tavern (pictured), offering cocktails created by leading mixologist Gareth Evans.

ME London

ME by MeliĂŁ, designed by Foster + Partners, has the Marconi lounge bar on its ground floor and the rooftop Radio bar on the 10th floor (pictured above).

The Great Northern Hotel, designed by Archer Humphryes Architects, features the GNH Bar (pictured below).

The judging panel includes: Steve LaBouchardiere, co-founder of interior design company, designLSM; Una Barac, director at hospitality architecture and design specialist Scott Brownrigg; Dennis Irvine, director at Fox Linton Associates design studio; and Jan Wilson, managing director of RPW Design.

This year, Hotelympia will feature a dedicated show space called Design at Hotelympia, featuring a gallery of exceptional designers, new materials and art and a seminar programme featuring some of the best designers from around the world.

Content for the design theatre has been developed by curator Stirling Johnstone in partnership with the Society of British and International Design (SBID), the national representative organisation to the European Council of Interior Design and Architecture and the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).
