Jim Beam seeks cocktails to “make history”
Bars are being challenged to come up with an “inspirational” Jim Beam whiskey cocktail that is “worthy of making history”, with a team prize of a trip to the distillery in Kentucky. The “Shake History” competition, which has been launched by distributor Maxxium UK as part of the global “Make History” campaign, is open to bar teams of three or four.

Luminar announces major club investment
The Luminar Group has announced a multimillion-pound programme to transform its nightclubs across the country. Projects include the conversion of Oceana club in Cardiff to its new concept Pryzm, the opening of a new club in Swansea, a new retro-themed bar Vinyl at Cameo in Bournemouth, and refurbishments of Cameo in Guildford, Surrey, Squires in Preston, Lancashire, Air & Breathe in Dartford, Kent, and Liquid in Hanley, Staffordshire.

London Cocktail Week team plan beer week
The organisers of London Cocktail Week have announced plans for another celebration of drink: London Beer Week. Running from February 16 to 22 next year, it will be set among London’s top pubs, bars and breweries, including self-guided tours, promotions, tastings and other events. It will tie in with Craft Beer Rising, the festival of beer, music and street food in east London from February 19 to 22.

Music venues partner e-cigarette brand
Blu eCigs, the premium electronic cigarette brand, is raising awareness of “vaping” through a partnership with club and music venue operators Academy Music Group (AMG) and Live Nation Entertainment. It will see the use of e-cigarettes permitted at the companies’ venues across the UK alongside exclusive advertising opportunities both on site and on their digital platforms.

Jack Daniel’s brings back Sinatra whiskey
Jack Daniel’s is bringing its extra-matured whiskey created in honour of Frank Sinatra back to the UK in September. Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select was launched as a limited edition last year, made with Jack Daniel’s No 7 Tennessee Whiskey aged in barrels that have extra layers of toasted wood and bottled at 45% ABV. It is supported by promotional activity in top London bars such as The Punch Room at the London Edition hotel.

Zeo range adds sweeter berry flavour
A new variant flavoured with blueberry, raspberry and cranberry is to be added to the Zeo mixer and soft drink range. Due to launch in September, Zeo Berryz is intended to reach a wider audience by offering a sweeter flavour profile than the brand’s existing citrus-based range.

Bars tap into Heineken rewards scheme
More than £1million in support has been given to the on-trade in personalised marketing and PR tools in the first five months of a scheme run by drinks company Heineken UK. Over 250 outlets have benefited from the Our Shout programme which rewards operators with points when they stock the company’s brands. The points can be redeemed on a wide range of business-building services.

Shortlist for Women 1st Shine Awards
Bosses working in the drinks, bar and restaurant sectors have made it to the shortlist of this year’s Shine Awards run by Women 1st to celebrate women working in hospitality, travel and retail. For the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award, the shortlist includes Kirsty Loveday, founder of UK distributor Love Drinks, and Kim Kaewkraikhot who, with Martin Stead, founded restaurant and bar operator Thai Leisure Group.

Coe Vintners publishes digital brochure
Wine and spirit merchant Coe Vintners has launched its first digital wine and spirits brochure to the trade to revolutionise the way customers can interact with their wine and spirits supplier. The wine section allows visitors to navigate through each country by selecting a flag, with a live link through to each producer’s product information. They can also view the location of the wineries on a large interactive map.

Smithfield basement bar up for lease
The Cock Tavern beneath the Poultry Hall of Smithfield Market is being offered on new lease terms after the City of London Corporation appointed leisure property specialist Davis Coffer Lyons to find a new tenant. The premises cover around 4,220 sq ft in the basement and sub-basement levels and benefits from a licence of 6am to 2am Tuesday to Friday and 8am to 2am Saturday and Sunday and 6am to 11pm on Mondays.

Krug bar pairs champagne and seafood
Champagne house Krug is to open a Scandinavian-style bar serving champagne and seafood on London’s South Bank in collaboration with new restaurant Beast. Krug & Krustacean will run from September 3 to 7 and include serves such as king crab from Norway with a glass of Krug Grande Cuvée.

Sky to broadcast all Euro qualifiers
For the first time, Sky Sports is to broadcast all 53 nations hoping to qualify in over 250 matches in the European qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2016. Every Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland qualifier will be exclusively live, with highlights and analysis of England’s games also available. Germany kick off the coverage on September 7 with a match against Scotland and viewers will see all the home nations in action in the first three days of matches.

New operations boss at Ping Pong
Restaurant group Ping Pong has appointed Michael Pearson as head of operations. He previously managed SSP UK’s restaurants at Gatwick and Heathrow and headed food and beverage operations for Intercontinental Hotel Group UK.

Restructure planned for Charles Wells
Charles Wells, the Bedford-based brewer and pub operator, has announced it is bringing its major operating divisions back under the main parent company identity in the new year. It will again be known in its entirety as Charles Wells, incorporating Charles Wells Pub Company and Wells & Young’s Brewing Co. The John Bull Pub Company business that runs nine managed houses in France will be renamed Charles Wells, France. It follows Charles Wells’ purchase of all shares in Wells & Young’s, originally set up as a joint venture with London pub company Young’s.
